A 17 year old pregnant girl, Eva Casara, was found with a single gunshot to the back of the head on Christmas Day in a Chicago suburb. The young mom died the next morning, but miraculously her baby survived. The deceased was between 22 and 25 weeks pregnant when she was fatally shot.

Eva was found slumped over the snow between two apartment buildings in Dolton, IL around 8 pm on Wednesday. Her baby weighed only 1 pound and 5 ounces and will be named Lailani Paris Casara in respect of her deceased mother’s last wishes.

NBC Chicago reported that investigators believe Eva was shot a few blocks away and dumped between the apartment buildings where they suspect she may have been lying on the ground for 40 minutes or more until she was spotted by a witness who called 911.

The teen was rushed to a hospital then transferred to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to the Chicago Tribune. Eva died the following morning, but her baby girl was saved. Medical staff named the baby girl, Baby Doe, and listed her in critical condition.

The slain teen’s grandmother, Fannie Casara, 63, told reporters, ‘We’re taking it hour by hour, day by day.’

“She looks like her mother,” Fannie Casara said. “She’s beautiful, and she’s so tiny. All those tiny fingers and toes.”

At this time police have not disclosed any possible motives in the shooting death and the family has not released any theories on what they suspect could have happened. Her grandmother said she didn’t want to speculate. But the teen’s mother expressed that they just want to see justice served.

‘I want my baby back. She didn’t deserve that,” Eva’s mother said. “My princess. I miss her so much. … She’s as beautiful inside as she is outside.’
