What? Three Tenn. Men Have 78 Kids with 46 Different Women and Don’t Want to Pay Child Support

Three Tennessee men are making national news after amassing 78 children by 46 different women – and yes they are trying their best to get out of child support.

Terry Turnage has 23 children with 17 different women, Richard M. Colbert has 25 children with 18 women and Desmond Hatchett holds the Knox County record with 30 children with 11 women.

For the most part, the state of Tennessee is left to pick up the slack left by the lack of financial contributions made by the fathers.  Turnage, who was recently summoned before a judge for child support payments on his 23 kids, did not even bother to show up to court.   But we’re almost certain that he showed up when it was time to make more babies with the women that he has brought into his life.

One of the mothers, who spent nearly eight years with Turnage, says she did not know Turnage had 20 other children.

“During the whole relationship, I only knew of four children,” Latoya Shields told WREG. At that time, three years ago, my child was the 21st child. Yeah, that would be overwhelming for anybody.”

The children are the biggest losers in Turnage’s situation, as one of the mothers describes his relationship with his daughter that they share.  A lot of men in this situation don’t even know the names of all of their kids, and certainly don’t know their birthdays.

“She calls him and it’s a “hi” and “bye, see you later” type of situation,” she said.

She also adds that when she does receive child support payments, her split has been between $6 and $9, hardly enough to support a child financially for a day.

Also, 33 year-old Desmond Hatchett, who has 30 children by at least 11 women, has been in and out of prison over the past three years – and has amazingly fathered another nine children.  If you take away the time that he was locked up, his feat is truly extraordinary.  There is also no talk about the number of STDs that are passed when a person has that much unprotected sex with that many different people.

Hatchett was sentenced to six years on prison for aggravated assault, but had most of that term suspended for ‘enhanced probation’ – which was repealed after getting arrested for domestic violence.

Hatchett’s paycheck only allows for $1.49 to be paid per child.  He told that he actually had four kids in the same year. Twice.  He also claims that he does manage to remember all of his kids’ names, ages and birth dates.

“I didn’t intend to have this many, it just happened,” he said

Richard M. Colbert, who has 25 children by 18 different women, claims he doesn’t have to pay for any of his children because they are all adults.

Colbert also states that he feels lucky. “Everybody’s not able to have children.”

Having that many children doesn’t just happen.  There is a very distinct process in baby making and there needs to be more pride in the child-rearing aspect of their fatherhood.  Attorney Warren Campbell says that if a person does not pay child support then the state ends up paying and there is no legal way to stop people from having children.

This begs the question:  Should a person be given the incentive to get sterilized after having too many kids that they cannot afford?  After all, they’ve shown that they are harming society by making children that society has to pay for.  Maybe something should be put in place to deal with this, other than hoping that a clearly irresponsible person is going to do the right thing.

@Kat reid- be careful what you ask for. Someone might suggest that your mother should have been sterilized before she became pregnant with you.

The men should be sterilized and the women’s tubes tied, fact: the women know what they are doing and so do the men! The people are fed up of taking care of other peoples babies, welfare checks, food stamps, free daycare etc., nothing is free, those that work are taking care of these carpetbaggers!

First off let me start by sayin i get food stamps daycare and other services but no that does not mean i am lazy i pay for mine and aint nothing free because i pay for daycare just as well as a copay pay when i go to the doctor and i pay taxes as well but when u need help u need help period. And yea those females were crazy for having all those babies for real for real the men are to blame. They are not miss cleo to know how many kids these men have. Not everyone has a mommy and a daddy who has money that they can pass down. U have no idea what people have been through to judge the next. Blame the dads who dont care because those woman are trying their best

Jerry Springer must be in charge of this website. These types of situations are the extremes, but it is a disgusting example of the breakdown of morals today. Clearly, nobody involved in this believes in marriage or has any sense of traditional values.

These are a lot of children born out of wedlock and those children are off to a difficult start in life and their outlook is bleak to say the least. Many people commenting are only upset because of the number of children involved, but not what this represents.

I am assuming that they are black because it is clear that many black men and women don’t have any concerns about STD’s or putting themselves into bad situations. The women who are complaining about the amount of support they are receiving are just stupid to put themselves into single parenting situations.

The three men I saw in photos at another site are Black. It seems misleading to have a photo of a little White baby at the top of this story.

One of the Black Mothers was on TV crying because she was not receiving child support. She was a mess.
