Mom Arrested for Bringing a Baby to Jury Duty

Mother Laura Trickle said that she was currently breastfeeding her child when she was called by Lee Summit court to report for jury duty back in August. She asked the court to exempt from jury duty because she was breastfeeding her son and had no one to watch the baby. Her request was denied. The new mother was told to make arrangements for child care or bring someone to court with her who could look after the child. She did bring the child with her to jury duty but she didn’t bring anyone to care for the baby. The mother was then arrested and will face a judge this coming Thursday.

Skipping jury duty was not a choice for Trickle because she could have been found in contempt of court, ordered to pay a fine of $500 and possibly be arrested. According to a written court order the woman “willfully” and “contemptuously” appeared for jury duty with her baby and without anyone to care for the baby. The woman does not agree with the charge and does not believe that she is a criminal. She says she has never even received a speeding ticket.

Unfortunately, breastfeeding women are exempted from jury duty in only 12 states. There was a new legislation introduced recently to exempt breastfeeding moms from jury duty across the whole state of Missouri. The senator Rob Schaaf who is trying to pass the legislation believes that passing something like this will encourage women to breastfeed rather than turn them off from it.

The women is expected to go before judge Roldan who is known to have excused jurors for a death in the family and even teachers who said they had to give midterm exams. Roldan declined to talk about Trickle’s case.

Pity the society which ignores the well being of the children and caring parents, for not being part of the sickness and injustice.

Why did she not put her breast milk in a bottle and leave it with a babysitter that is what an intelligent woman would have done, does she think she is the only breast feeding mom to be called to jury duty! This is just another White woman looking for a “pity party” sorry lady I don’t feel sorry for you learn to deal with life! You did not want to go therefore you thought your baby would be a good excuse, when they did not let you out of it bringing the baby along was your way of looking for pity!

Everyone may think this mother is wrong for bringing her baby to jury duty. Well I must say this, if she can’t afford to have someone looking after her breast feeding baby whilst she is in a court room judging others of their crimes, they should have release her from jury duty and let her take care of her child. What they going to do, put her in jail for taking her baby with her, fools don’t understand that it’s not everyone who wants to be on the jury stand. This system should be different all together. I think I would have done the same.

I have made my comment already, this system should be changed. If a mother have a baby and her way of life is breast feeding her baby daily, what should that mother do I would like to know. Sometimes a case may takes weeks to end, why should that nursing mother be obligated to go on jury duty and leave her nursing baby to send someone to jail or to free the innocent. I think this system stinks. The people higher up should get their act together for Christ sake.
