Tia Mowry Vaccination with FluMist® Quadrivalent

Reported By: Britt L

Actress Tia Mowry has teamed up with MedImmune Specialty Care, a division of pharmaceutical firm AstraZeneca, to launch an awareness campaign encouraging people, specifically African Americans, to get an annual flu vaccination.

Mowry combines humor and informative statistics in an online video titled “I Insist!”, assuring families that flu vaccination is apart of living a healthy lifestyle and it should be a priority for everyone.

Luckily for families with children, the MedImmune Specialty has a nasal mist, no needles needed.

“That’s one of the main reasons I joined. It’s the one vaccine that is needle-free. I’m one of those people who is not fond of needles,” joked Mowry.

The nasal spray used, FluMist Quadrivalent, is a mist of influenza vaccine designed for children, adolescents and adults. From ages two to 49, the mist is used to fight off any other potential influenza strains that FluMist doesn’t in the human body.

Many Americans are afraid of needles, so the nasal spray is less painful and convenient for the average needle fearing patient. MedImmune believes this is powerful development, since that African Americans are less likely to be vaccinated for the Flu.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, less than half of adults and over half of children get vaccinated.

In addition to the statistic, African American seniors are around 30 percent less likely to be vaccinated for the flu or pneumonia than white senior citizens.

Black patients are hospitalized for flu-related illnesses at higher rates than any other minority group. Immortality rates are also high in the black community due to the lack of vaccines being performed on black adults.

The CDC also confirmed that African Americans were greatly hit by the H1N1 virus in 2009.

“African American’s are less likely to be insured or have a medical home, so one of the barriers is access, to being able to be in the doctor’s office in the fall to get the vaccine,” said CDC epidemiologist Mark Thompson.

“We’ve also found that in some studies African-Americans are more likely to have concerns about the vaccine, to believe in certain myths about the vaccine,” including the vaccine could actually give the patient the flu.

Mowry says that she lives a healthy lifestyle, but hasn’t been aware of the flue vaccine. She didn’t even see the need for getting one.

“The myth that’s out there is it’s like a bad cold,” explained Mowry about the flu. “It’s very serious; it’s potentially dangerous and can turn into so many other things, like bronchitis.”

“With my son, he’s had whooping couch vaccination. We did it because he travels a lot. In order for me to feel comfortable about his safety, I decided to vaccinate him,” Mowry explained.

“The flu vaccine is the best way to prevent getting the flu.”

Since 1994, I have been taking an annual flu vaccine and haven’t had the flu since, 1993!!!! I am African-American and approve this message. Oh yeah, the flu vaccine doesn’t give you the symptoms and make you sick. If you got sick, you may have been in the early stages of having already contracted the flu and didn’t know it when you received the vaccine. This is way your doctor won’t give you the vaccine if you are ill, for the vaccine could be compromised, as well as your health. It work’s because each year prior to 1993, I got that dreaded flu each season like clockwork, and was down for the count for at least, 7 to 10 days severely sick. So, do your body a favor and get vaccinated, it will thank you for it!!! 🙂 × 🙂 = 😀 ~♥~.

I know many people who will not be vaccinated and some have very valid reasons, most are just ignorant. I get the shot every year and do not get sick. I can be a little uncomfortable for a few days vs being severely ill. The flu kills many people every year. Some things are not worth the risk. Ignorance is killing our community in so many ways.

If you have ever had the Flu, you know that you don’t ever want it again, and Tamiflu only works if you take it within the first 24 hours of contracting the flu and it only eases some of the symptoms. I have only missed the shot once, it does not hurt. Get in in your dominating arm, or nose if you are a big chicken, have your children vaccinated. the Flu is hard on adults and harder on children and its deadly. Prevention is a Plus,
