One-Year Old Hit by Bullet While Riding in His Stroller

Tragedy struck this week as a young child was hit by a bullet that was intended for his father.  Antiq Hennish was in his stroller Sunday night when a bullet hit him in the head just a block from his house in Brooklyn.

The child’s father was the target of the gun, according to police and family.  He was unharmed, but in pain after seeing what happened to his young child.

“He was screaming ‘My baby got shot.’ He was going crazy,” said Gina Gamboa, a witness.

“The baby was breathing, but his eyes were closed. It’s crazy. They just will start shooting.”

There were four shots taken and the baby was the only one who was hit.  The baby was rushed to the hospital, where he died shortly thereafter.

“He just started walking. He was vibrant. He was full of life,” said the baby’s great-uncle, Chris Dobson. “I can’t believe it.”

The family is from Trinidad, and had just celebrated the boy’s first birthday last May.  His father has a long criminal history, with more than 20 arrests.  Police believe the shooting was payback for an earlier incident.  Police say that when the assailants began shooting, the father ran away from the stroller to divert attention from his child, but it didn’t work.

“They shot at him and ended up shooting the baby,” Dobson said.

Antiq is the 16th shooting victim in NYC this year under the age of 16.
