It Takes a Village: 10 Year Old Entrepreneur is Setting the World on Fire

My hometown of Detroit has received so much negative news lately that it is heartwarming to learn about a fellow Detroiter who is doing something extraordinary.  Asia Newson, at the age of 10, is leaving her imprint on the hearts and minds of industry leaders in the Motor City.

“I want to let everyone know that I am Detroit’s youngest entrepreneur and I like to do what I like to do,” Asia recently told Local 4.

Newson is a young businesswoman who is determined to live life on her own terms. She sells candles with her father and wants other young people to understand the value of hard work. “I teach young people, like myself, how to make their own money,” Newson said about her business, Super-Business Girl.

The no-nonsense entrepreneur is serious about her craft. “Some of my trainees are older than me, but I’m ten, this is my company and I’m the boss of the company so you have to listen to me, and if you don’t then I don’t know what to tell you,” she said emphatically.

At one point, Newson met Dan Gilbert, the multi-billionaire who founded Quicken Loans and now owns prime real estate throughout Detroit.  Recognizing him from his commercials, she was not awe-struck; instead, she was compelled to learn more about running a successful business. She even asked if they could have a follow-up meeting.

At the tender age of 10, she is already forecasting her plans for the future, “I would like to have a store front in his [Gilbert’s] building and the Compuware Building. That’s my main goal.”

Understandably, both of Asia’s parents are proud of her accomplishments and drive. “She inspires me. She’s kind, she’s outspoken and she’s intelligent,” her mother said.

A local Detroit company, Bamboo Detroit, whose theme is: “Work for yourself. Not by yourself”, started assisting Asia and the Newson family three months ago.

Both of the co-founders of Bamboo Detroit see great things in her future. “I think that she will become one of the most successful young persons that America has in all honesty,” said Brian Davis one of the co-founders.

“She already has it right. She already knows about customers, she knows how to structure a business. It’s incredible,” asserted the other co-founder Mike Ferlito.

We wish Asia Newson continued success as she steps into her greatness. She is a prime example that with love, support and perseverance, there is no age limit for ingenuity.

this story should be shared with all young black students by their schools and they should have their students keep up with what Asia is doing and how she is doing it especially the way she thinks! Get busy teachers and parents this one of the most positive stories to share with our children on a daily basis…they hear enough negative news! give them something they too can grow from…Bless

It not only takes a village, but parents who care enough to guide a child in the right direction.

It is nice when a child is recognized for doing work. Not to knock the efforts, but many of our children are forced to work, they do not have an option. Including myself. I was working at an early age not by choice. Bills had to be paid. Fortunately for me, I finished school, but some of out children do not finish middle school, much less high school because they must work to survive.

It is great that children can have the option to work. Keep up the good work to all our children.

Oh good. Another American who’s all about making money and getting advice from a rich white guy who’s evicting the people of Detroit so he can gentrify it. Perhaps she can one day become his Olivia Pope.

Kimberly is right when she says there “is nothing better in life than a smart intelligent kid who wants to do positive beautiful things with their life.” Unfortunately this kid is all about the benjamins.

What’s wrong with getting advise from a rich white guy? I’d like to sit down with Bill Cosby and get advice maybe.

If you want communism, move to Russia. Oh yeah, that would mean getting you off of your nanny government’s teat first. Good luck with your life, you’re going to need it.

Great article, I am so happy that her parents are fueling her desire to be her own boss. She is so inspiring. I know you will continue to do well because of your drive and determination. She is a positive role model not only for other children but for adults. Her passion will open many doors for her. Let’s face it children are our future. Go do your thing Asia.
