Known just as much for her beautiful smile as she is for her business savvy, former model turned businesswoman, B. Smith recently announced that she is closing the D.C. location of her B. Smith Restaurant. Located in Union Station, the restaurant, open for over twenty years, was a favorite destination spot for tourists and local residents alike.

B. Smith Restaurants are known for their southern inspired menu items, ambience and affordability.   Besides the Union Station location, there are two additional restaurants in the state of New York.

The company released a statement indicating that new trends in the D.C. restaurant market may have led to a drop in revenue. They also indicated that Union Station may no longer be an ideal fit, “These new locations will feature the same delicious southern cuisine that the restaurants have served for over 25 years in a more contemporary, high energy ‘bistro’ setting. The restaurants will also feature more options for the health conscious consumer.”  Many  of her fans are hoping that Smith will reopen somewhere in the metro D.C. area.“We are looking forward to new and exciting things that we can’t wait to announce!” Smith added.B. Smith is also credited with opening the doors for Blacks to receive their own cooking shows on major food-themed networks.  In addition to her involvement in the food industry, Smith has a partnership with  Bed Bath & Beyond to sell her goods; she has performed in off-Broadway acts;  and she  hosts a weekly  SiriusXM Radio show:  “B. Smith and ‘Thank You Dan’ Show.”

The entrepreneur was also one of the first blacks to pen a cookbook in 1985:  “B. Smith’s Entertaining and Cooking for Friends.’’  Several industry insiders say that she paved the way for southern-themed meals to be taken seriously.

Smith has been a trailblazer and role model for many cooking enthusiasts who followed in her path and we wish her great success with her next endeavor.
