A 21-month old girl named Daphne Webb went missing from the back of her father’s car in Oakland, CA on July 10. Her family is still searching for the child and continues to pass out flyers and hope that she will be returned to them unharmed.
Oakland PD and the FBI are both on the case and searching the area where the abduction initially happened as well as the area surrounding the home where Daphne and her father, John Anthony Webb, lived with his elderly mother that suffers from dementia.
Webb says that he entered a store on International Boulevard in Oakland around 11 o’clock in the morning and when he came back to his vehicle Daphne was no longer in the backseat. One witness named Joe Noble says that he could tell that the fear and concern were real because, “after a while he broke down and he did start to cry.” An Amber Alert has been issued and authorities are currently searching for a woman that was said to be leaving the scene with a baby that fit Daphne’s description.
The local ABC news station KGO-TV released a description of the child, “Daphne is described as black, with short, curly black hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing orange two-piece pajamas with pink hearts, and pink socks.”
Police say that Webb is not a suspect in the abduction of his daughter but he has been questioned in relation to the abduction. Police have also asked several people that know John and Daphne Webb to verify the last time the two were seen together publicly. Several witness say that they had not seem them together in weeks but they did not believe he would do anything to harm any child, let alone his own daughter.
The family also held a candlelight vigil on Wednesday for Daphne in an attempt to refocus the community on the missing child. Kevin Davis, Daphne’s grandfather, spoke about the experience of losing Daphne, “Oh, man, it’s unreal because there’s no way to prepare for something like this. And I’m sure a lot of people can say that about their specific situation, tragedies they go through, but for us there’s really no way to even prepare.”
As the search for Daphne continues let’s hope that the family can remain strong and the community can offer them support in such a dire time of need.
