Haitian born beauty and actress Garcell Beauvais has recently announced she will be releasing a book entitled “I Am Mixed”, drawing on the experience of raising bi-racial twin boys, Jaid and Jax. The book is the first of a series of  “I Am” books, that will be followed by other short stories about dealing with divorced parents and adoption.

The “I Am Mixed” book tells the story of  siblings Nia and Jay, as they explore the emotions and thoughts of being of mixed ethnicity.

Beauvais, who had her children with a white man, firmly discusses the “elephant in the room” topic that she had to cover with her boys at a very young age.

“I didn’t want them to be asked why is your mommy brown and daddy white and not have them understand it themselves,” explained Garcell in a Lifetime’s celebrity blog interview.

“I wanted them to know that they’re the best parts of us put together. What I wanted most of all is for them to be proud of who they are and celebrate themselves.”

Actress Halle Berry, who also has a child of mixed race, wrote a foreword in the book.

“The book is an invaluable teaching tool that all children from all races can learn from,” the Academy award winning actress wrote.

Garcell also refers back to a time in her own childhood, migrating from Haiti to an all white suburb in Massachusetts. The actress explains that was the first time she ever felt “different” from those around her.

“When I went to school, I was the only black child, and the kids would touch my skin and feel my hair because they hadn’t seen someone like me. I never thought of myself as different until then,” exclaimed Garcell in the parenting interview.

Garcell married her twins’ father, actor Mike Nilon, in 2001. The couple divorced in 2011 after rumors surfaced that Nilon carried on a 5-year affair while married to Garcell.
