Tom Joyner Offers Rachel Jeantel a Full Ride to an HBCU

Rachel Jeantel, the friend of Trayvon Martin who had a rough time on the witness stand, has been through a lot.  She also has caused controversy, since people were debating whether she was “ignant” and sloppy or a brilliant and misunderstood woman.  But one thing that everyone can agree upon is that more education is always a beautiful thing.

Tom Joyner is a big supporter of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).  He jumped into the fold by offering Jeantel a full ride to any HBCU she chooses.

Jeantel received the offer during a visit to the Tom Joyner Morning Show to discuss the verdict in the case of George Zimmerman.

Joyner said, “If you want to graduate from high school, and go to an HBCU, even if it’s not in Florida but especially Florida, like Florida Memorial, Edward Waters or FAMU, if you want to do that, I want to help you do that. I will help you get tutors to get you out of high school, tutors to help you pass the SAT and I will give you a full ride scholarship to any HBCU you’d like.”

Tom says that the money is going to come out of the Tom Joyner Foundation.  She spoke on the stand and said that she heard Trayvon say, “get off, get off” implying that he was being attacked by George Zimmerman.  Zimmerman’s decision to shoot Martin led to his trial, after which he was acquitted.  Millions of people feel that he got away with murder, and the case is one of the most racially divisive since the trial of OJ Simpson.

So, do you think Rachel is going to put Tom’s offer to good use?

God Bless you Tom Joyner. I have been waiting to see if someone with a brand and money was going to stand up for that young woman. I have also been looking for a way to contribute to something for her that can help her change her life as she was treated and commented about so unfairly that I stopped watching the trial as I could not stomach the professional journalist and lawyers.

Mr. Joyner you are to be commended! It would have been nicer to have made the in private , gotten here answer before she is subjected to more ridiculous comments. It is my opinion the young lady suffered and endured so many opinions that we must realize opinions are like assholes; we all have one.

I applaud Mr Joyner for him reaching out to help this young lady. What a remarkable man. Thank you sir. I bet not one other celebrity that has the funds to help this young lady will offer her one penny to help. We need more Tom Joyner’s in the world, especially in the black communities. I’m just so overwhelmed with his commitment towards her. “Tear” Where you at Oprah???? Still backing Paula Deen?

Rachel Jeantel, young lady this is your time, the support is there and carefully laid out for you to make a conscious decision. Equally importantly, you should know it won’t be easy but well worth the sweat equity in the end. Along with the offer that’s on the table I pray that counseling for the grief associated with Trayvon’s death is available. Take this opportunity to make yourself, your family, and afo course the naysayers proud. Be blessed young scholar.

This is great news. Black people helping each other is the only way to solve anything. Criticism and hurting each other is nothing more than self loathing in its purest form. I sure hope Rachel follows through on the offer. More important someone recognized her potential. Mr. Joyner, you are an inspiration.

This young woman with flawless chocolate brown skin, lips that male and female White people pay thousands of dollars to have manufactured, sexy eyes , and a voice to whisper in any mans ear is no dummy.
She is not the reason why the US is in the 20 percentile in education of industrial nations. She is not even counted. I hope she takes advantage of the offer. She is already an historical figure

Rachael is a fine a**ed, big chocolate girl who actually is VERY bright. I mean, folks call her “ignant”, but she went toe-to toe with that attorney. She made him shut the h*ll up and search for his next words a couple of times.
Let her get some education and get those rough edges get smoothed out…she will be all right. She will be a force to be reasoned with.

Really, TOM? You are such an exploiting old dirtbag. HBCUs need smart students — not 19 year old students who can’t read cursive. Send her to a community college. Our schools will not improve if we keep admitting non-college-ready students. You will do anything to make yourself look good. Just sad!

They have programs (like remedial) that will help her. If she is willing to do the work before she even gets to campus, she will be OK. Her first year may consist of 1 credit catch up courses…but so what?!?

You all are SMOKING. there is nothing appealing or cute about her. Sorry, but we’re so quick to try to defend ANYTHING black that we can’t see clearly, sometimes. She is ignorant and belligerent. She is also ILL-EQUIPPED for college – any college. TJ’s offer won’t really matter, because she can’t take advantage of it.

This is a HARD LESSON in reality for us, honestly. Considering education the “white man’s way,” and condemning those of us who want to better ourselves as “acting white” needs to be firmly in our rear-view.

She is an embarrassment. Don’t let the need to view EVERYTHING black in a positive color your perception.

The TRuth is, you are one Ignorant Person, did you come in here to get attention, everyone deserve a chance to get an Education to better themselves, even YOU,I think you need to bring more than that Stupid Comment in here, take that Crap to FAUX TV.

      • The TRUTH

        July 17, 2013 at 5:41 pm

I’m ignorant? Fool, I’m telling you the truth. You don’t have to celebrate EVERYTHING black at all costs. Ignorant is ignorant, and she is probably ill-equipped for college isn’t a stretch.

And yes, I think Zimmerman is racist, that he profiled Trayvon, and that the verdict was a miscarriage of justice.

And no, I don’t watch FAUX NEWS, but it’s pretty predictable you would write that. I’m surprised you didn’t call me a “hater,” since that’s all we seem to do when criticism is leveled at things or people we hold dear.

You’re probably in the same camp of folks that give n*ggas like Flavor Flav a pass with that ol’ “all money is good money” argument.

I pray she will continue her education and become a wonderful/educated strong professional, maybe becoming a lawyer!!! On my website I too am working to bring help to those children with an incarcerated parent. Through the sale of my Bible Stories CD,s our Black Brothers will be able to speak weekly with their child/children, thereby giving them hope and words of encouragement. We must brake this chain of incarceration. I hope this young lady will reach out and take the hand offer her. Be blessed, Eve

Brother Joyner, thank you for your great exemplification of OMEGA’s Cardinal Principles: Manhood, Scholarship, Uplift, and Perseverance. Your Manhood will certainly Uplift her towards Scholarship whereby she will Persevere into the attorney that will one day put Don West’s son in jail. Is GOD Good or what?

I applaud Tom Joyer’s offer to help Rachel Jeantel attain her HS and college degrees. Which stands in sharp contrast to the lousy job the prosecutor didn’t do in preparing the novice witness in the george zimmerman trial. I was outraged when the prosecutor failed to object or help an overmatched Ms Jeantel, in the cross-examination by defense lawyer Don West. I believe the suspect 6-woman jury was racially bias from the get-go. In an interview on CNN one of the jurors referred to george zimmerman as George several times in a tone that implied she had a social relationship with the killer. Either this juror lied to the court during jury selection or the prosecution failed to ensure a fair trial for the Martin family. The moronic statement by Tracy Martin to defense investigators that he didn’t recognize Trayvon’s voice screaming for help [on audio tape] seconds before george zimmerman shot Trayvon Martin dead helped the lying defendant and his dishonest lawyers win a not guilty decision on both counts. Ms Jeantel’s lack of language skills and her childish demeanor on the witness stand hurt Trayvon Martin’s chance of receiving justice in Florida’s criminal court system.

As an educator I would like to correct all of the ignorance on here. First Rachel is not the first nor the last person who can’t read cursive! Maybe u idiots didn’t know but many schools moved away from teaching cursive to students. I have had many students of all backgrounds but mostly white affluent who couldn’t read cursive because it was not taught. Does that mean their dumb no it means it was never taught. Next how many of u speak more than one language? Probably nit many! Rachel speaks more than one and I will assume English was the second one in her home being her background is of Haitian decent. Before u criticize know the facts. Before u look down on someone make sure you can. I’m so disappointed in the comments I read. Who would promote that she doesn’t do anything different accept a dumb idiot. Rachel good luck in your endeavors! If u need a math tutor let me know! Get yours because no one can take it away

Third, Rachel Jeantel I know you have been through a lot, please take this opportunity and Blessing. If someone would have offer my daughter a full scholarship, she would have said yes on the spot. These opportunities don’t come to young black ladies or men everyday. You will have a testimony to tell. You are a Bless young lady and don’t let nobody tell you otherwise.

I thank GOD Tom J stepped up. It is amazing how all our so-called enlighten black brothers and sisters like Dr. Cornell West, Tavis Smiley, Dr. Boyce Watkins, Oprah, and many others talk a great game but I do not see them stepping up to help anyone but themselves.Jeantel is a very smart young black woman I speak some french, and Japanese but it took me almost 20 years to learn the 60% of each I know. We have got to stop criticizing our young and start uplifting them and protecting them in any way possible. Even President Obama needs to grow a pair and stop worrying about how white and the republicans will react to what he has to say to black people and the world.Lastly, we collectively as black people have to start protecting our children and ourselves better and stop letting the media and white America define who we are every time one of us does something wrong or is stop by police black people are the first say something negative. We need to keep our opinions to ourselves until all the facts are known then we should be careful how express or speak those opinions in public. Jeantel babygirl take Tom Joyner up on his offer not for me or the iGnant! black people speaking ill of you but for yourself and to honor your friend Trayvon! may GOD keep you safe and bless you and your family as well as Baby Tray and his family. MUCH LOVE, Reynolds Rapley Jr Brooksville, Florida

Thanks Tom! however, sometimes college is not the answer. maybe she needs some skills to learn enough to open up a busines or learn a trade. She coul use her fame to become a cosmetologists or small business owner. If she graduates from college – maybe – just maybe, she will have a high probability of joining the ranks of the black unemployed with Degrees.
