Oprah’s Partnership with Tyler Perry Helps OWN’s Ratings and Profits Soar

There are only a few people who can claim they have started a cable network from scratch and turned a $300 million dollar profit in just two years. Well, add Oprah Winfrey to that list. Oprah’s OWN network will turn a profit six months ahead of predictions made by industry experts.

Initially Oprah struggled with making the transition from daytime talk show host to owner of a network. The formula that she used during her days as host of the Oprah Winfrey Show failed. She went through numerous CEOs before taking control and drastically changing the network’s format.

The key to OWN’s success, besides Oprah’s brand, is the fact that the channel is now willing to take risks on original programming. Many of OWN’s newest programming efforts tend to lean more towards Black audiences, especially her recent partnership with mega film producer Tyler Perry.

Tyler Perry currently has two shows that have yielded a large viewership, “The Haves and Have Nots” and “Love Thy Neighbor”.  Both shows are in their first run and many speculate that they have the potential for syndication which will increase profits further.

Perry’s shows aren’t the only ones that have helped to boost Oprah’s ratings and profit margins.  Iyanla Vanzant’s “Fix My Life” has become another fan favorite. The show focuses on people, primarily celebrities, who have undergone tremendous life struggles and traumas. They find themselves on the cusp of despair and Vanzant offers her version of a spiritual intervention to help them get their lives back together. One of the most famous episodes was when she tried to work with rapper DMX.

In addition, “Welcome to Sweetie Pies” and “Oprah’s Next Chapter” have also helped her edge out her competition with women in the 25-54 target age range. With a start like this, it is probably just a matter of time before OWN is a multi-billion dollar empire.
