You may know about the DVD release of the new Halle Berry film, “The Call.”  But you may not know all the details of Halle’s life, how she got started and who she is as a woman.  Halle was the first African American woman to win the Academy Award for Best Actress, but in her long and stellar career, there are quite a few other exciting details that you might find interesting.

Here are five things you may not have known about the great Halle Berry:

1) Before becoming an actress, Halle was a beauty pageant contestant.  She was first runner-up in the Miss USA Pageant and got 6th in the Miss World Pageant in 1986.

2) Halle’s big break came in the Eddie Murphy film, “Boomerang,” made in 1992.

3) Halle received the Gold Raspberry Award for Worst Actress for the 2005 film Catwoman, being one of a small number of people to actually collect the award in person.

4) Her real name is Maria Halle Berry and her name was legally changed to Halle Maria Berry at the age of five.  Her middle name was chosen from Halle’s Department Store.  She was born in the city of Cleveland, Ohio.

5) Halle’s mother, Judith Ann is of English and German descent and her father, Jerome Jesse Berry is African American.   They divorced when Halle was four years old.  Halle’s father left when she was four and never came back, according to Berry.
