This week, Serena Williams drew the ire of arch rival Maria Sharapova after an awkward story appeared on Serena in Rolling Stone Magazine.  In the article, Serena appeared to be insulting Maria’s boyfriend, Bulgarian player Grigor Dimitrov.

As one who is accustomed to returning tough serves from Serena, Sharapova fired back at Williams, revealing an embarrassing set of details about her personal life.

“If she wants to talk about something personal, maybe she should talk about her relationship and her boyfriend that was married and is getting a divorce and has kids,” Sharapova.

French coach Patrick Mouratoglou appears to be the target in this one, since he was recently divorced and has been romantically linked with Serena.  Sharapova also attacked Serena for her comments about a r@pe that took place in Ohio earlier this year.

Williams says that she is trying to put the issue behind her as she prepares for the first round of Wimbledon:

“I feel like Maria, unfortunately, was inadvertently brought into a situation she should have never been brought into,” Serena said.

“I personally talked to Maria at the player party. I said; ‘Look, I want to personally apologize to you if you are offended by being brought into my situation. I want to take this moment to just pour myself, be open, say I’m very sorry for this whole situation’.”

Williams continued to work toward reconciliation and not allowing the media to bait her into a counter productive distraction before a very big event.

“It definitely hasn’t been easy. And I feel like I really wanted to say, I apologize for everything that was said in that article,” she said.

Serena is fighting for her 17th grand slam victory, and her sixth Wimbledon.  Also, Sharapova has reason to dislike Serena:  Williams has defeated her 13 times in a row.  Maybe she should just do all of her talking on the court instead.
