ushushHit maker and Grammy Award winning singer, Usher, is getting ripped for his role as Sugar Ray Leonard, in the upcoming feature film, “Hands of Stone”. The boxing film is about legendary boxer Roberto Duran. The singer has been preparing for over a year for the role of a lifetime and he still has a long way to go, as he plans to lose 25 more pounds for the role. Currently at 175, he would like to weigh in at 150 pounds.

“Hands of Stone”  tells the story of Duran, a champion fighter in four weight divisions. The Panamanian fighter defeated Sugar Ray Leonard in 1980 to become the WBC welterweight champion. The fight became known as “The Brawl In Montreal”. It was said that Duran was not happy with the fact that Leonard received more money for the fight than he did.

In a phone interview with TheGrio.com Usher said that he is honored to play the legendary boxer saying,

“You couldn’t find a more stylized boxer than Sugar Ray Leonard.” “He was an incredible motion guy, the way he moved around the ring, and I think my dancing will make it easier for me to pick up his moves. I’ve been working on familiarizing myself with the ring, sparring and just understanding how to move in the ring.”

Of the film he said, “I’m up for the challenge, and I’m looking forward to it,” he said. “I think my overall feeling is one of anticipation. It seems like this is a real passion project. It’s a film that everybody is so invested in, and I have the good fortune of having the character I’m playing still around.”

Usher will be joined on the big screen by Robert DeNiro, Arcel and Edgar Ramirez as the lead character. This will be Usher’s first leading role in a feature. The film will be shot in Panama and is set to start shooting in October.
