Lauryn Hill Back In Court To Learn Fate After Making Last Minute Tax Payment

lauryn_hillThe public may learn the fate of Lauryn  Hill today as the singer is due back in court.The judge gave the troubled singer a two week extension to come up with $504, 000  of the back-taxes that she owes as a result of neglecting to pay her taxes from 2005-2007.

The singer plead guilty last year to not paying her federal taxes, which are reported to be well over $1 million dollars. Hill has been very vocal lately about her tax matters and rumors that she signed a deal with Sony in an effort to pay off her debt.  

In a statement on her Tumblr Hill said, “It has been reported that I signed a new record deal, and that I did this to pay taxes. Yes, I have recently entered into an agreement with Sony Worldwide Entertainment, to launch a new label, on which my new music will be released…And yes, I am working on new music.”

According to Lauryn Hill ‘s attorney, Nathan Hochman,  the singer has “now fully paid” what she owes  in back- taxes. According to Reuters Hochman sent out an email statement saying, “Ms Hill has not only now fully paid prior to sentencing her taxes, which are part of her criminal restitution, but she has additionally fully paid her federal and state personal taxes for the entire period under examination through 2009.”

Hill is looking at a year for each of the three charges brought against her. However that sentence could be lowered based off of her recent payment. Her attorney is seeking probation for the singer.

Over the weekend Hill released a song entitled Neurotic Society. Of the rushed release Hill said, “here is a link to a piece that I was ‘required’ to release immediately, by virtue of the impending legal deadline. I love being able to reach people directly, but in an ideal scenario, I would not have to rush the release of new music… but the message is still there. In light of Wednesday’s tragic loss (of former label mate Chris Kelly), I am even more pressed to YELL this to a multitude that may not understand the cost of allowing today’s unhealthy paradigms to remain unchecked!”
