After more than 50 years in the industry and 30 years after making her first appearance on Broadway, Cecily Tyson is up for a Tony Award for “Best Actress in a Play”. Her current Broadway show, “Trip To Bountiful” helped her achieve the memorable goal. Throughout her successful career Tyson has been nominated for Academy Awards and is a three-time Emmy Award winner, but this is her first Tony nod.  In total, “Trip To Bountiful “is up for 4 Tonys, which includes “Best Revival of  a Play”, “Best Sound Design of a Play”, and Condola Rashad  who is  up for “Best Featured Actress”.

Tyson plays Carrie Watts, an elderly woman who longs to return to her small hometown of Bountiful, TX. But Carrie faces a lot of opposition from her overprotective son, played by Cuba Gooding Jr., and daughter-in-law, played by Vanessa Williams. Her trip becomes a trip of remembrance and reflection.

Tyson had been anticipating her return to Broadway saying, “For years I have been searching for the perfect project to bring me back to my true home – the stage,” “In many ways Broadway is my Bountiful and I’m eager and honored to return with this strong, passionate, and funny character in a timeless American classic.”

Written by Horton Foote and directed by Michael Wilson,“Trip To Bountiful” is one of the most adapted works by Foote. There was a teleplay done in 1953 by NBC and a feature film done in 1985.  Of Tyson taking on the lead role, Wilson said, “The Trip to Bountiful is among Horton’s most beloved plays, and Carrie Watts, one of his most memorable characters. To do the play and role justice, you need an actress of rare stature and command, Cicely Tyson has, over the span of a distinguished career, depicted iconic Americans engaged in immense struggle. I am thrilled that she is returning to the stage now to have her trip, to lead us all on a journey that promises to be unforgettable.”

Trip To Bountiful started its Broadway run April  23rd.
