Jay-Z, Beyonce Get Heavily Criticized for “Insensitive” Trip to Cuba

When you’re a celebrity, it seems that no matter what you do, someone is going to get mad at you for it.  But then sometimes, they get mad for a good reason. Rather than telling you if you should be upset or not, we’ll allow you to judge this one for yourself.

Activists are angry with Beyonce and Jay-Z for choosing to be clueless about a recent visit to Cuba.  Mauricio Claver-Carone, the D.C. director for the US-Cuba Democracy PAC, says that the two megastars have done a disservice to Cubans by not educating themselves on human rights issues taking place in the country before their recent visit.   Mauricio’s group is working to fight for democracy in Cuba and tells TMZ that he’s upset about the nature of this visit.

Jay-Z and Beyonce were in Havana to celebrate their 5th wedding anniversary.   Mauricio says that Cuban rights activists are upset about the couple’s decision to visit the country because  “There are women getting beaten on a daily basis, women who are being jailed for no reason … people are fighting for their freedom. It’s extremely insensitive.”

Of course Beyonce and Jay-Z don’t have much to say on the matter.  If they did say anything, it might be something like “My next album drops in three months.”

Fidel is the best of the Communists. American policy to Cuba has failed in the past. Good for these two, maybe they can bring some freedom to the dissidents there.

Mr. Carone’s remarks are beyond ridiculous and why would he or anyone else care where these two go. They are not gov’t dignitaries or UN reps. He needs to check the inequities and abuse issues in his own country first. Until women get equal job opps, equal pay and all kids get benefit of decent affordable health care he needs to keep his mouth on permanent lock down.

So, so , true! They can visit where they chose, who cares we know that people everywhere are selfish, including America! Jay and Bey don’t care about no one but their family members, so they are just like everyone else in the world today! This is why the human race cannot advance because of apathy and that’s between them and God!

Once again this site is being used to push something negative. There are tourists going to Cuba everyday from America. My son went years ago (via Jamaica). Activist Assata Shakur has been living there since escaping the injustices of the American judicial system….so what are you talking about? I see you use the code words to cause divisiveness like “womens rights” and “abuse”, but we are not fooled. Quite frankly, the only reason (except for the rare article that makes sense)I continue to return to this site is to keep up with the tricks used by people like you to bamboozle others. This is a prime example.

Lets get something very straight. The Cubans that are living in Florida are the rich, white, euro cubans of Spanish descent who were the slave owners initially, then the cuban robberbarons, and finally the political thugs of the Batitista regime who escaped their country rather than try to govern in a civilized and humane manner. It is mind boggling that these Cubans who supposedly loved their country can come out and attack Jay-Z and Beyonce for their visit. What a coward.

Lets not forgot it was the very same Cubans who are in America now who came to America illegally took over the drug trade in South Florida, lead the most corrupt police force in Miami Dade and previous to that engaged in CIA sponsored state terrorism to over through Fidel Castro.

    What a scumbag……….

You do have some very factual information that you have chosen to share. Of course there are many that deny truth to themselves, and paint a very bleak picture of certain core facts which if you did not live it,you probably would not know based upon how it is slanted coming out of South Florida . Research if that too hasn’t been tainted by the elite forces that are in control . Their claim to the rite of passage, which translates to the power brokers of Miami, could stem from the fact that Florida, is a Spanish name, and was originally found by _______ ? U r seeing a wee bit of what many others from different cities and states within America, and nearby countries help to build and contributed their labors for this to become the Mega Magic City,as it is today . One World, One People, All Inclusive ? ?

One more thing….you said that “activists” are upset with the Carters visit to Cuba…then the only quote we get comes from Mr. Carone who is the director of a PAC. It’s his all day job to push their agenda and naturally he jumped at the chance to criticize the Carters because they are so high profile. This PAC gives less than a damn about womens rights or human rights…they are simply fixated with Castro because he ran the greedy 1% out of Cuba and he is the one leader that gave America his ass to kiss….and his country flourished.

“It’s crazy how a visit to Cuba brings public scrutiny to J and B, but when they visited corrupt governments in Africa, no humanitarian awareness was brought up, but of course we know the reason for that”…Demond HugoBoss Brown. I agree with this man. If you people knew the real truth, Castro has done more for blacks in Cuba then all the American Presidents have done for blacks in USA combined. The people who are making their visit an issue are the same ones who made Elian a issue years ago!

ABSOLUTELY! The problem with ‘us’ is that we look for heros and freedom fighters in those who have not chosen to take up that post. Let us face it, I have not heard Beyonce nor her husband rally against injustices in AMERICA…why would they do so in another country!?! I say that they should do just what they did, enjoy their status as ENTERTAINERS and not be held accountable to act as diplomats representing any noble causes in Cuba or ANY WHERE ELSE!!!!!

They have the money & the rights to visit anywhere they so please. They are not politicans, just rich singers and song writers. They chose to vacation in Cuba which is their personal biz. There is always going to be somebody or some group bitching over any and everything. As someone has already said, if the presidents cannnot change the mind set of Cuba what the hell makes you think Jazzy & Beyonce can. Just get over it!

I am glad we don’t falsely imprison people in America, and stand in the way of groups of people receiving a proper education. Could you imagine living in a country that suspended your rights, and called it freedom? The thought of living in a country where a group of people are treated like 2ND class citizens frightens me.

    • Nicole

      April 6, 2013 at 1:06 pm

America does falsely imprison people. America’s history and present consist of treating non-whites as second class citizens, so you should be very frightened.

      • Regina James

        April 6, 2013 at 3:02 pm

In most black people’s mind, they are falsely imprisoned because they hate themselves, as the white man wants them, they continue to give the little money they have back to the white community, so, yes they are right on track! They will never get beyond this because they are so set on pleasing people who hate them and could care less whether they live or die!

What a load of nonsense. They are displaying nothing but good taste by going to Cuba. Having been there myself last year, I can tell you if I had the choice of living in Cuba or America it would be Cuba – every time. It’s far more civilized than America and there’s far less racism to deal with.

Not to offend but I honestly do not know why there are high expectations for a high school drop out and a past drug dealer. I mean really -these two make money singing and or rappping. There a mute point in the political world and most of the people who idolize the folks do not have a clue.

    • Lee

      April 6, 2013 at 3:01 pm

Anytime you begin with “Not to offend,” you already know your words are going to offend and that is your purpose. Regardless of their past choices, they are living their lives and enjoying the benefits of making changes and working hard.

I am sure you could find others who dropped out of high school or made poor choices that were criminal who are examples of what one could achieve with a second chance and hard work. For example, Dr. Bill Cosby dropped out of high school and earned his GED through the mail. One of our past U.S. Surgeon Generals, Richard Carmona, has a GED, also, and started his college education at a community college. I also know a dentist who earned a GED and a practicing attorney who spent time in federal prison as a young adult; this person graduated at the top of the class and passed the California Bar on the first try. The point is that many people have made mistakes but are able to overcome them. I am sure none of us want to be judged solely on our past.

Let us celebrate our ability to overcome adversity–instead of tearing people down. Use our examples as motivation to inspire others not to give up on having the life they desire–even after making poor choices in the past.

Hell with that. They aren’t politicians or anyone that can lend credibility to the governance of Cuba. Personally speaking I would visit Cuba in a heartbeat. My purpose would be to check archives(if any) to ascertain what happened to the Maroons – pre and post American Revolution that accompanied the Spanish to Cuba after their departure from Florida.

I’m not a fan of Beyonce or Jay Z but they were there on vacation, not on a diplomatic mission. The same thing that is happening in Cuba is happening in the US and I haven’t heard them speak about it here either. If it doesn’t involve “mo money” they don’t appear to be concerned about it. They can really start with not corrupting the minds of our young Black men and women and start putting something positive in their minds about how to build a successful empire using start-up capital with resources other than money they acquired “slanging” drugs.

    • sasack

      April 6, 2013 at 1:06 pm

Never heard of Beyonce being associated with dealing drugs.

      • Wiser

        April 6, 2013 at 4:39 pm

HA! Not associated, but married to one. But it would be expected from someone with extremely low education, morals and talent. The mixed up europeans passing as black products are always looking for a free ride from the Black man, regardless of how he obtains his money.

    • Lee

      April 6, 2013 at 3:43 pm

Beyonce’s father sacrificed by moving into a smaller house, so that Beyonce could follow her dream, she worked hard to be who she is, today. There was no drug money involved. As for Jay, he did not use drug money to start his empire. He worked hard at becoming the best rapper he could be, then learned the business side of the industry. I think you watch too much television; few drug dealers earned enough money to build an empire of any sort and that includes Jay. That is Hollywood’s perception that is somehow given validity.

Jay uses his life story as a cautionary tale of growing up poor and finding drug dealing one of a few options, he felt was available to him, at the time. His lyrics have matured, as he encourages youth to make better decisions than he made growing up.

Bottomline, if we choose to judge people based solely on their past, then what do we say about our weed-smoking-cocaine-snorting President? Exactly…that was his past (a young dumb kid who succumb to peer pressure and social influences of his space and time). The same should hold true for Jay.

My daughter and granddaughter took an educational trip to Cuba. I as a retired educator am looking forward to a trip to Cuba. I guess we hate communism so much that we would prefer a country that is actually being run by the MOB. That is what that country was before Castro.

    • Lee

      April 6, 2013 at 3:56 pm

We do not have a problem with Communism–if we can make money from it. That is why we love China: The biggest Communist country on the planet with cheap labor, few regulation and numerous human rights violations. The only difference between Cuba and China is that businesses can exploit the cheap labor in China, the one thing they cannot do in Cuba.

The Mob ruled Cuba was willing to do business with America and the U.S. was willing to look the other way. It was Hollywood’s playground.

Castro was not willing to allow the exploration of cheap labor. This is not an endorsement of Castro or his policies, just a fact about U.S., Cuba relations and how we arrived at a 50 year embargo on Cuba.

  20. Haile

    April 6, 2013 at 1:27 pm

If more people made a pilgrimage to Cuba even some of the officials in America they would see how silly this 50 year blockade is. Nat King Cole had to go in the back way in the Hotel National. The thief Al Capone owned the Hotel Capri in Cuba . If a machine went wrong Cubans had to call to America to find out what to do.It is better to be free than a well fed slave. That is the problem Cuba was America’s back yard and they did not like that they were told to go,that Cuba belongs to the Cubans. What has Cuba done ?Tell me that. They tried to kill premier Fidel Castro more than 300 times. What has he done? If they tell you walk you better run.Another thing, make a pilgrimage to Mother Africa.Read the book,”Overturning the culture of volence by Brother Omali Yeshitela.ISBN #1-891624-02-4.” and ” Open wounds of Latin America by Eduardo Galeano. ISBN #978-0-853-45991-0.” President Hugo Chavez gave a copy to President Obama in Trinidad.

Sorry to say this but thats your fight. My country is here your contry is there you wanna fight then you should be th here fighting them not over here blabbing about Americans visiting your country. I just wish blacks had the sight of mind to keep whites out of Africa since the beginning of time. So their a Communist regime. Most of the Cubans that left were from the upper classes or ruling classes some were being killed so on that i do have an understanding of why your here. Fight for your people but keep your sttack on the regime. These two will learn at some point. That if they were Cubans and they lived there they would have been made to serve the country and their wealth would have been taken from them or if they opposed the regime they might have been jailed or perhaps even killed in the streets during Castro’s takover of Cuba.

I think B and J just don’t know any better. They are ignorant about certain things going on in the world–politics, government, protocol, etc. Just like when B took that money for performing some years ago then turned it over to charity. She just doesn’t know any better.

    • Lee

      April 6, 2013 at 3:09 pm

Let me see if I understand your example of being ignorant. Taking money for a performance and giving it to charity is ignorant? If that is your point, you are the one who is ignorant. What she did was a great thing to do because it went to help the less fortunate. She realized she did not need the money and made a great gesture that shows an understanding that humanity falls and flourishes together. Good for her.

    • Lee

      April 6, 2013 at 3:17 pm

Their being megastars is not based on whether you like them or not. It is based on the fact that Jay and Bee have businesses that span the globe, and there are few places where they do not have fans. They are brands. Again, your dislike of them does not determine their status nor does it affect their bank account.

      • Wiser

        April 6, 2013 at 4:54 pm

Your bank account will continue to deplete from supporting such useless nonsense. Those two fools don’t care anything about you or would even offer you a dime. Become proactive in more worthy issues and worlds causes. Advocate for women rights in Cuba and the mass incarceration of Blacks & Browns in the states. Read several books, do extensive research on true Black leaders and scholars. Correlate The Mis-education of the Negro with The New Jim Crow and all the forums being held throughout the nation. Defend that!

We cannot follow the agenda of everybody who has one. Furthermore, everybody’s fight is not Black folk’s fight! What has Claver-Carone done for Blacks that he has standing to demand that Blacks unite with him to accomplish his Cuban objectives? “To have a friend one must also be a friend.”
Cuba is going through a metamorphosis. Even President Obama has loosened some restrictions on travel there. Don’t be surprised if Beyonce and Jay-Z do a benefit concert in Cuba sometime soon . . . to help the battered women and others whom Carone claims to champion.
But then, the pair could do a benefit concert to help young Black entertainers in America get a slice of the mega-bucks entertainment pie.

Come on there’s so much more important things and no I am not saying this agenda isn’t important, it isn’t the only agenda in the world. And this couple can’t solve them either. I’m not Jay Z or Beyoncè ‘stan’ but kudos to THEM for stimulating interest in Cuba and their pre 1950’s economy. Intend to visit there myself in the near future. Lifelong trip on my bucket list. Cuba is a beautiful, rich,VIBRANT and amazing BROWN country which STOOD UP to a bullying America. KUDOS to them for ‘standing their ground’ . I’m not implying that communism is good or defendable but neither economy has truly benefited people of color ANYWHERE. If you don’t believe man controls poverty…look at the example the white man has made of Cuba. ‘Do what we say/want or we’ll cut off your supplies’. Is that not a bullying tactic? Kudos to the Cubans and their steadfast resolve. Don’t cry to me about the human rights violations currently/allegedly going on in Cuba….Americans need to sweep around they own porch first!!!

Let me see. China, the largest communist country in the world. It’s ok to visit and spend money. China, the same country that exploits both adult and child labors with cheap pay. China, the same communist country that attempts to steal our military secrets on a daily basis.

Let me see. Miami, the only city in america whose city counsil refused to host Nelson Mandela when he visited after being in prison for 27 yrs. Why? Because he said something nice about Fidel Castro for reaching out to him while he was in prison. Has anyone seen a person that would be considered Afro-Cuban in a position of power in Miami?

I would like to visit Cuba because I like the music and the culture. Those Euro-Cubans need to realize that Black Afro-Americans were here before them and that they will not dictate to how to live our lives.

Americans are not even allowed to go to Cuba! One can however get there by leaving from Canada.

All of you low information people do not see this country is changing, fast, by the time the President leaves office we will all but be a Communist nation!

I remember a Prime Minister from the former Soviet Union saying “it will take time but America will be destroyed from within, without a shot being fired”! It’s happening!

The administration is making the populous totally dependent upon the government, they control how much money you can make, what you can and cannot eat, dependent upon them for the food that you get to eat, control of the medical care you are allowed to receive, child care and early learning (head start) responsible for feeding your child while at school, the job you have and on and own.

Only the State Department could have given permission for them to go to Cuba! It’s a 20 minute flight from Florida (let’s see you take a trip to Cuba) Maybe they were sent as Foreign Affairs adjutant or maybe diplomatic representatives such as Dennis Rodman in North Korea!

Lets see; Gays can get married, soon so can any other perversion, weed is legal, so all others will soon be legal, a 12 year old can walk into a drug store and purchase the morning after pill, all business must pay for female employe’s birth control regardless if the think it’s wrong or not.

President Obama is leading the nation down a path that we may not be able to come back from, and blacks are so in love with the man, we feel he can do no wrong even though he has done nothing for us as a people, it appears that because he looks like us, because he is the first, because we want him to look good and to succeed, we think that he thinks the way most of us do.

Persons with higher than average intelligence most likely are not in agreement with you on any general subject. BHO is not your friend.

Not even Clinton hangs out with or does for the Celebrity what BHO does for them. Jay Z, Beyonce they are entertainers that the President is using to make you believe he is just like you and I.

    Just saying.

I am sick and tired of people who create stories about governments and leaders of other countries that they don’t like. Bey and J should travel to any country that they want to. There are people who are imprisoned falsely here in America, check out Florence Maximum security prison in Colorado and other prison within these united States. Mr. Fidel Castro is the best thing that happen to Cuba. He is doing the best with what he has. What proof do you Mr. Mauricio Claver-Carone have. You will say anything to appease those who donate money to your pac, This government is still mad with Castro for chasing them out of his country; just like the European countries are mad with Haiti for beating the French, and work together to destroy that country. They were mad with Libya’s leader Muammar Gaddafi who help the African countries and was try to create a United States of Africa, He employed many Africans, They the racist white Arabes with the help of the US, murdered him and is destroying the country. How dare you criticize others for vacationing in Cuba. I am sure they will spend money much needed money for the citizen of Cuba. If you are so concerned for the poor women in Cuba, I would think that you would be happy that someone who has money would think of Cuba as a place to visit and spend money to help the poor women of cuba. The US embargo on Cuba is still in effect because you Cubans, They the politicians are afraid to lift the embargo for fear of losing cuban votes, what hypocrites, some of you talk about how the people are being treated badly and how poor they are but some of you want this government to be harsh with the Cuban government, who is being punished here? it is not the government; it is the poor people, who people like you used to further their agenda.

There is another side to this visit, could they be working for the…..ummm, sometimes things are not what they seems.
Sometimes celebs are used for you know what, think about it. There are always three sides to everything.

This is funny to me in so many ways but I brought up a point to some people a few days ago how people can come here illegally and do whatever they want to, disregard US laws and regulations, change the language from english to whatever language they want and come in taking over the US (our governments fault because everybody is money and power hungry)and nothing is being said or done but we could never go to any other country and do half of what they do here and this is a prime example and they only went for a vacation, legally, the world is crazy. And let us not even mention the illegal things they bring from over the borders with them and set up shop in the US and even the women abuse issues we have here now are because of some of what they bring across illegally. I am from a little town that is over populated with hispanics and growing, who have gotten here illegally and stay here, and now our little town is full of gangs and human trafficking and many other evils that we have never seen. I am not saying there were none ever nor am I saying any other race or culture would not bring and do evil, I am just stating we could never go to their countries and do have of what they do here and this is proof of what I am talking about, we can’t even vacation in their countries…mannnnnn.

People know your history before making comments on years of history/politics so you don’t sound ignorant.

I don’t give a two shoe shitty what JZ and Beyonce do. All they care about is about is themselves. They strive for Greed and fame but then again I guess that was part of the contract being attached to those of the earthy LIGHT! ILLUMINATTI! Yes they can go where ever they want, but what are they doing for thier own here in AMerica besides brainwashing them and telling them ok my CD will be out such and such a date! AND OKAY???? Thn what?

I am still waiting for my 40 acres and a mule. When will African Americans, who are descendents of slaves, receive an apology for past and current offenses? When will this country stop incarcerating citizens at an alarming rate just to fill their “for profit jails”? When will discrimination and inhumane treatment be addressed in these United States? If you look at the US’s human rights issues, it is terrible. There are more people incarcerated in the US than any other place. I guess the Carters can’t come home.

Who cares? Are there not more important issues to address in this country? Preparing children and youth for responsible citizenship, less testing in schools, more technical and vocational courses in middle and high schools, needed improved positive self-concepts rather than good self-esteem via making babies and wearing pants way-below their brains?

A exhausted poker participant is much more likely to make mistakes than one who has just begun a sport or tournament. Once more, these are just a couple of of the many summer time occasions in the Southern Illinois area.

The evaluation will be utilized to determine how well a participant has absent in a game. Players hope to better their hands with the playing cards they replace in this stage. It is 1 of the preferred pastimes for individuals.
