Audra-McDonald-Picture-004Last year news broke that Aretha Franklin was in talks to do a biopic about her life. At the time of the announcement, Franklin had a few people in mind w to play her. One of the names mentioned was Broadway and “Private Practice” star, Audra McDonald. While seeing Porgy and Bess, Franklin started thinking about McDonald playing her in the movie. She said, “ I went to see Audra in Porgy and Bess, and I was very impressed with her dramatic ability. She was terrific… And Jennifer [Hudson] had voice. Audra has voice. The question is whether or not Audra can cross over into soul. You know, she does Broadway magnificently. But can she get over into soul is the question.”

When asked by Broadway.com about playing Aretha Franklin, McDonald said, “It would be an honor to play her… Other than that we leave it to fate. Who knows.”  Franklin also considered Jennifer Hudson as a strong perspective. To play her father, the late Rev. C.L. Franklin, Aretha is considering Denzel Washington.

McDonald is staying busy with a new album entitled “Go Back Home” ready to drop. According to Broadway.com McDonald will perform songs from the album, on May 21st ,as part of the Live From Lincoln Center concert, which airs on PBS on May 24tt. The album from the five time Tony award winner features songs from several Broadway shows including, “The Glamorous Life” from A Little Night Music, “First You Dream” from Steel Pier, “I’ll Be Here” from Ordinary Days, “Migratory V” from Saturn Returns, “Edelweiss” from The Sound of Music ,“Make Someone Happy” from Do Re Mi, “Baltimore,” “Tavern,” “Some Days”, and the Michael John LaChiusa-penned “Virtue” and “Married Love.”
