“Girlfriends” was a hit sitcom on UPN before it merged with WB to create the CW, which essentially white-washed the programming. It was a realistic look at black women in various stages of their lives leading differing lifestyles and trying to advance in their careers.

Even I, as an African-American man, enjoyed “Girlfriends “and its look at the world from a vast array of perspectives. Luckily, for those that are wondering what happened with the heroines of the show, Mara Brock Akil, a principal member of the show, recently posted a tweet expressing interest in beginning a Kickstarter campaign to raise money for a “Girlfriends'” film.

This news is coming hot on the trail of the Veronica Mars movie Kickstarter getting 3.1 Million dollars in donations in just 24 hours with a whole 29 more days to go in the campaign. I think it is an excellent idea to do a movie for “Girlfriends,” as “Sεx and the City” got two films. The film was great way to see the continuation of the lives of the characters even after the series had wrapped.

I’m positive that “Girlfriends” could find a large enough donor base to get a film going, even if it turns out to be a limited release independent film.

Would you like to see a “Girlfriends” on the big screen?
