Marlon Wayans Speaks On Late Tyler Perry Inspiration

Tyler Perry has not only inspired you and I in our movie theater seats but also the Wayans family. It appears others have rumored that Perry is patterning himself after the Wayans family. Although there are no cold hard facts one way or another, Marlon Wayans addressed the matter among other topics in a recent interview.

According to reports from The Grio, “[Marlon] considers Perry an innovator, one who may have initially shadowed the Wayans’ trail, but who blazed a larger one in the process. Specifically, Marlon states, “I also feel like he’s (Perry) opened a door for us. It’s good to have these different people of color, your peers, in some capacity outshining you because then you look and go – ‘Oh! That’s the way.’ Tyler has a great business model, and so he’s a pioneer in his own right. He’s actually inspired us.”

Marlon did not let his appreciation stop there. In fact, he even went into a little bit of defense for the fellow actor and filmmaker. When addressing the relationship between minstrel/coon shows of the past and comedy of today. Concerning Perry’s famous Madea character, Marlon says, “I don’t agree with if you put on a dress, that’s coon-ism or whatever. There’s no vanity in comedy.” Marlon remarks about himself, “I put on a dress; I’ll shrink myself down to size; I don’t give a f***. If it’s funny, I don’t care. Don’t tell me what’s funny because you don’t dare to have the balls to go be funny. So, let me do what I need to do to evoke laughter.” Lastly, Marlon did not neglect to put the finishing touches on how he feels about the racial history of comedy. “We need to change how we look at minstrel shows,” he says.  “Do white people look at silent films and go Charlie Chaplin’s a minstrel? Do they watch Jim Carrey and go, ‘Oh he’s physical; he’s cooning?’ No. I think sometimes black people are a little too hard on ourselves, and we should appreciate our past.”

One thing is for sure, not matter who inspired who first — the Wayans or Perry — fans have certainly shown their love for both entertainers. Furthermore, both the Wayans family and Perry have done their part to historically impact the entertainment industry.

    I agree 110 percent with Marlan I loves!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! me some wayans brothers from in Living Color, to white chicks, to Rat Now! and Tyler Perry. alway’s have, Alway’s will “PERIOD” as a matter of fact after work (Tonite) (in my Bernie mac voice) i’m flying to see A HAUNTED HOUSE! and probably will go and see it a couple more times. I adore our African american comedians and film makers. i heard just yesterday that Mr. perry was voted worst! actor and actress in a movie (Good Deeds, and playing Madea ARE YOU SERIOUS RIGHT NOW!!!!
