Law and Order SVU’s Courtney Vance Returns To Broadway

courtneyvanceMany may not know this but, a lot of the great African American television and film actors started in theatre. Denzel Washington, Samuel L. Jackson, James Earl Jones, and many more have graced the Broadway stages. Denzel Washington is slated to star in a Broadway revival of A Raison In The Sun, in 2014.

And now it has been announced that Law and Order SVU star, Courtney B. Vance, will come back to Broadway in Lucky Guy. Joining him will be Tom Hanks. Broadway veteran and Tony Award winner, George C. Wolfe, will direct the Nora Ephron piece. Lucky Guy tells the story of the late Mike McAlary, an acclaimed New York City tabloid columnist. McAlary, who died in 1998, of colon cancer, was known for his “no holes barred” reporting style at the New York Daily.

Vance will play editor, Hap Hairston. Vance has not been on the Broadway stage since 1990. His Broadway credits include 2 Tony Award nominations for the August Wilson play, Fences, and  Six Degrees of Separation.

Lucky Guy will begin previews at New York City’s Broadhurst Theater on March 1 and open April 1.
