Oprah Reveals Breast Cancer Scare, Says She Might Shut Down Magazine

Oprah Winfrey might seem super human to the rest of us, but it only takes a doctor’s diagnosis to remind us that this is not the case.  During a recent conversation with The New York Times, Winfrey mentioned that in October, she thought she might have breast cancer, but found that it was a false alarm.

She also spoke candidly about her struggles with O Magazine and that she might get rid of it.  The mogul says that the magazine is “bleeding money” and that appears to be driving her crazy. Oprah even admits that after finding out that she might have breast cancer, she didn’t even tell her best friend Gayle King until she knew for sure that everything was OK.

Since Oprah left daytime TV, times have been tough.  Her new venture, the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN), has struggled.  She also has trouble getting people to buy her magazine.

The television network lost $330 million last year, which is a huge chunk of money for even someone like Oprah.  Also, the magazine lost a fifth of its sales after her television show went off the air.

“Obviously, the (old) show was helping in ways that you know I hadn’t accounted for. I’m not interested, you know, in bleeding money,” she said. “Ultimately, you have to make money because you are a business. I let other people worry about that.  I worry about the message. I am always, always, always about holding true to the vision and the message, and when you are true to that, then people respond.”

Scientists say that women who don’t have kids are more likely to develop breast cancer.  Oprah, who is 58 years old, has given her life to her career and supported thousands of children around the world, even without giving birth to her own. So, even though she never had a child, she has inspired enough children to be a mother 1,000 times over.
