Race-Baiting? Experts Angry that Mitt Romney Blames Single Mothers for Gun Violence

If you recall during that most recent presidential debate, candidate Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama were asked to suggest solutions to the serious gun control problem in America.   Both candidates gave what they probably felt were thorough answers, but Romney seemed to believe that the problem was not with the weapons on the street, but with single mothers.

This claim has led to charges of racism and scapegoating by the Romney camp, who are presuming that having a single mother causes young children to be shot by gang bangers in their neighborhoods.

Such a suggestion releases Romney and other Republicans from the responsibility of keeping guns off the streets and out of the hands of criminals.

The National Rifle Association is a strong backer of the Republican Party and fights to keep gun laws from being changed.  But there are some who suggest that there is a consistent and concerted effort to keep revenue flowing by allowing guns to get into urban neighborhoods, where most of America doesn’t care about the death toll.  As a result of this approach, gun violence is the leading cause of death for African American males between the ages of 15 and 19.

Here is what Romney had to say about single mothers and their participation in creating the culture of violence in urban America:

How are we going to [change the culture of violence]? there are a number of things. he mentioned good schools and I totally agree. I believe if we do a good job in education and give people hope that they deserve. And perhaps less violence from that.Let me mention another thing – parents. We need moms and dads to raise kids. Wherever possible, the benefit of having two parents in the home. That’s not always possible. Lot of great single moms and single dads. But gosh, to tell our kids, before they have babies, they ought to think about getting married to someone. That’s a great idea. Because if there’s a two parent family, the prospect of living in poverty goes down dramatically. The opportunities that the child will be able to achieve increase dramatically. So we can make changes in the way our culture works to help bring people away from violence and give them opportunity and bring them into the American system.

A blogger and crime expert at explains just how flawed Romney’s thinking is on the matter.  He explains that you can’t solve these problems by simply telling every parent to get married.  Also, with the prison industrial complex sucking eligible black men out of the African American community, many women can struggle to find a husband with a similar racial and cultural background.
