Dr. Boyce & Nomalanga: Does CDC STD Data Seek to Make Black Women Look Bad?

In this video, Dr. Boyce Watkins and Nomalanga Mhlauli-Moses seek to figure out why some women were offended by the survey stating that half of all black women have Herpes.  Is this data cause for alarm or are there those who are simply seeking to make black women look promiscuous?  Also, do you have to be a promiscuous person to catch an STD?

Dr. Boyce Watkins and Nomalanga discuss this issue ask why so many black people appear to be disinterested in hearing the truth.

I think maybe the CDC EXAGGERATING a lot of these statistic’s to PREVENT the total population of Black women from having these STD or Aids by using a SCARE TACTIC. I’m Just saying, “48% of what number of Black women? in America?, women whom got tested?, or in certain state’s? Black’s make-up 13% of the U.S. Population, and Black women is a much smaller piece of that percentage. These disease’s could total ANNIHILATE the Black race in America so I understand why the CDC overly stress these issue’s. White’s make up over 70% of U.S. pop. and don’t need to be told as so, because their number’s are many here in this country.

    • I understand what you’re saying. My feeling is that everyone seems to have the opinion that the CDC report is incorrect, not because they have alternate information that disproves the report but, because it’s embarrassing. Problem is- it’s NOT so embarrassing that black ppl will change their behavior. Black women will continue to have out of wedlock children at a 70% rate which proves most BW are not concerned about the danger of having random, non committal, high risk, unprotected s*x. To live in denial of the ramifications of engaging in high risk, unprotected s*x is killing black women and black men.

I totally agree with Dr Boyce and Nomalanga on this issue. I have to take some time to reflect on how to convey it to my fellow sistas. We are a sensitive and defensive group. I am guilty of it I can’t lie. However I’m always pushing this same issue and folk either halfheartedly listen or think I’m being too preachy. I watched a friend die of cervical cancer caused by HPV. It’s a hard pill to swallow but WE MUST. It’s a sad day when we are perishing not from a lack of knowledge but a willingness to accept it. Thanks for putting this video out there. I will admit when I saw the CDC article I cringed. Great response love it!

Normalanga input and clarification was excellent.

I really don’t belive the statistics are that high but I do believe that to many African-American women are having unprotected s*x from high risk partners.

Having s*x under unsafe conditions causes unwanted pregnancy and disease for the mother and baby. To many men today are sleeping with other men,and high risk females who may indulge in drugs.

It is time for us to be smart about our health, bodies and our unborn.

    Save your life!

I’m with you on this one, which takes me back to my comment. I am not refuting the notion that some black women have herpes. Moreover, we must be careful of the information that we are so openly to accept especially from those who are deceiving. Just because statistics comes from an authorized authority does not make it so. Especially when the statistic is under 80%.

We should not hide from information that we need to know. However there does appear to be an odd selectivity in the information being presented by the cdc.

FACT: 54% of Americans have herpe

This would mean That a very high percentage of white women have herpes. What is the point of leaving these facts from such a report? and although it is important for us to know how this infection is affecting us why are black women being singled out?

    • Michelle Williams

You are absolutely on to something here Teri and I admire you for that. The question asked, “Is the CDC putting black women in a bad light,” so to speak. You are focusing on the question. My answer is yes because they should be discussing the statistics of all women with herpes and I can guarantee you more white women have it than any other women. So, why aren’t they talking about that? Especially since black men like to cross over and dip back. h**l, Blackwomen probably caught it from the brothers who cross over.

The problem I’ve always had with these statistics for years is this:
It takes 2 to have s*x. Therefore, if only one gender, namely African American women, has a high percentage of STDs; obviously, the Black Lesbians are the ones who are causing our statistics to be high, not the heterosexual black women.

  7. The facts are what they are, and denying and railing against them only makes things worst. If there is anything making black women look bad, it is the high rate of out of wedlock babies that they are having. Many of these babies come into this world infected and affected with and by STDs. Let’s put a stop to recreational s*x. It gets old just like any other kind of intertertainment, and is much more dangerous. WAKE UP AND SMELL THE FLOWERS BEFORE YOUR NOSE ROTS OFF!!!

I agree Dark Chocolate…if the future of the young gods we bring into this world isn’t enough to motivate us to be selective and deliberate about the environment we birth them into then perhaps the likely transmission of incurable std’s like herpes is.

Still I must reiterate and call into question the reason the national rate of herpes infection, 54%, is not discussed as part of the context for reporting the rate for black women???????

  8. KG

We should never ignore the fact that these are SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES. The argument is to be selective in your choice of mates? So, what man is left to sleep with? The few black men who don’t have Herpes? The fact that the rate is so high among black women is in direct relation to their partners WHO GAVE THEM THIS DISEASE. This is a commentary about promiscuity amongst MEN as well as women.

  9. Mz Burden

The study was based on 893 African American women…that is not the total population of African American women. However, we need to wake-up and protect ourselves so this statistic will not become a reality.

  10. The focus on black women in this matter sends the wrong message. The herpes virus affects everyone, men, women, white, black. Was a survey run on white women Also? If it wasn’t, why?

  11. CoCo

One thing you must understand is how statistics are formed, there is a study done on a SAMPLE population and then APPLIED to the general population. Therefore I dont find it a coincidence that often these studies are done in poor underpriveleged areas where the results are bound to show a result such as 48% of black women have herpes. Thats like 1 in every 2!!!! Thats crazy. Also you must understand the standard of deviation. Although the results could disperse to be 1 out of 2, how often does it? Standard of deviation is kind of like considering the average of the average. Like asking, okay this is the result, but how often does this hold actually happen? Dont be alarmed at how we are depicted in the media (I dont think we are really). I am currently trying to find the study this information came from. I thought Dr Boyce was going to touch on that but this video went in another direction than I expected. I just wanted to shed some light on this and understanding how we can be targeted often with these “statistics.”

If they were saying this about black men,you would not hear a peep out of black women. No one is picking on black women. We don’t need statistics to tell us that black women are overweight, have a lot of children out of wedlock, have more than one baby daddy, etc.Black women are so used to blaming and allowing black men to be blamed for everything. They are so used to this that they can’t accept responsiblity for the stuff that they do and there is no man around. This is why they suffer now.Stop acting like you are gods.If you do something silly, you need to be able to be called on it,being that Yall are such”strong black women”.I just wish you would grow up and own your own mistakes. Then you may be able to save some young girl from doing the same old classic stuff Yall do.Protect yourselves and your children by not having unprotected s*x and children with every smooth talking and walking male that you come into contact with.

    • Denise

Black women are continuously attacked by the media and by some black men!! Last time I looked, it takes two to have s*x!! Also l, you don’t know every single black woman in this country or in the world, so I suggest you stop generalizing all of us black women! We say all black men need to stop being a cancer to their communities, have tons of babies with several different women? Should we say all black men need to stop going to prison and get a college education? Can we also say black men need to stop being thugs and free loaders? You need to be careful not to generalize a whole group because some black men need to get themselves together as well and stop being a hypocrite because you’re playing the blame game too!

  13. jinsing

Herpes is horrible, no matter where ur @ & who u are. I’ve seen chics pass that std around like a cigarette, smh. Black women where I live are thirsty & it’s always the ones with several kids & just as many bd’s passing that std around like they have nothing to loose. Word from the wise, stick to ur toys ladies & gents, the worse that could happen is the batteries going out. (I’m just saying)
