Cheryl Ebberhart, the mother of accused “Brooklyn Beast,” Anthony Matthews, says her son is innocent. Matthews is facing a life sentence for allegedly engaging in a month-long torture of an ex-girlfriend. The 26 year-old female victim, lost half of her body’s blood supply from the torture. She was beaten with a piece of wood and sexually assaulted with a heated screwdriver. She suffered broken teeth (from a handgun), broken ribs, spinal damage, a broken nose, and assorted burns. A law enforcement source told reporters this is the sickest case they’ve ever seen.
Ebberhart believes her kindness towards the victim was repaid by treachery because the victim initially blamed herself for the injuries while seeking Ebberhart’s help, but told police Matthews caused the injuries once she left Ebberhart’s home.
“She came banging on my door at 6 in the morning,” Ebberhart said. “I opened the door, and she was all hunched over. She said, ‘Help me, Mrs. Ebberhart. Help me.’ ” Ebberhart claims she allowed the victim into her apartment and called 911. The woman confessed her injuries were self-inflicted before police arrived. “She said she had gotten into some bad stuff,” Ebberhart said. “She was back into prostituting on craigslist and she met a guy. She said her leg was hurt, that she burned herself with an iron.”
Authorities insisted that the wounds suffered by the victim were inflicted by Ebberhart’s son Anthony Matthews, an ex-con who served 12 years behind bars for a shooting. Court papers say it was Matthews who dropped the woman off at his mother’s house. “She lied because she doesn’t want her family to know she’s back into prostituting,” Ebberhart insisted. “My son just got out of jail. He’s an easy target. . . . She’s ruining my son’s life.”
Matthews has a history of terrorizing the woman prior to the Brooklyn brutality. She accused him of rape last January- but refused to move forward with the case, according to a source. Matthews is currently behind bars without bail, facing charges of attempted murder, kidnapping, assault, and weapons possession. Reports claim the victim was recovering at a local hospital in Brooklyn on Saturday.
