Woman Shot After Hugging Police Officer; Gun Discharged Accidentally

Adaisha Miller was out celebrating her upcoming birthday over the weekend when she was fatally shot. Miller would have been 25 years old on Monday.

The incident occurred in Detroit early Sunday morning when Miller was at an outdoor social gathering dancing with an off-duty police officer. According to reports, Miller hugged the officer from behind, which caused the weapon–which was in a holster– to fire.

“All she wanted to do was enjoy the weekend for her birthday,” Miller’s mother, Yolanda McNair said in an interview with  WDIV-TV. “She had every right to enjoy turning 25 and look beyond that.”

According to Police Sgt. Eren Stephens, she “embraced the officer from behind, causing the holstered weapon to accidentally discharge.” Miller was hit in the lung and in her heart. She died at the hospital.

The officer–whose name was not released– was placed on administrative leave while the incident is being investigated.

“For this to happen to her, whether they want to call it freak accident or mistake in judgment, it should have never happened to my child, and there’s nothing I can do to get her back,” McNair said.

  1. first of all it was a party why was he wearing his gun to begin with he should not have had it on accident or not thats someones child he killed he should be locked up

  2. Big Daddy

In most jurisdictions Police officers have to carry their guns at all times, but he should have had the safety on. It’s sad that she died in such a freak accident. What are the odds that a firearm would discharge even with the safety on?

  3. I don’t think he should be accountable. I think the manufacturers of the gun, holster, and the department itself are responsible. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not an animal & my heart goes out to the family, but there’s some personal responsibility too. I personally don’t hug people with guns. Common sense.
