College Basketball Player Convicted of Rape: Cries in the Courtroom

Suspended Oklahoma State University basketball player Darrell Williams was found guilty of s****l battery and rape by instrumentation Monday, though he was acquitted of two additional rape charges.

Williams broke down in tears as the verdict was read, saying “Oh my Jesus God” before turning to protest his innocence to the jury. The jurors, who met for approximately eight hours, recommended a sentence of one year in prison for each of the two remaining rape counts. Williams will be sentenced formally on August 24.

The athlete was accused of groping two women and reaching inside their pants without their permission during a house party in December 2010. One reported being dragged out into the yard against her will, saying the incident happened in the house’s basement. With little physical evidence to back up the claims, Assistant District Attorney Jill Tontz relied primarily on testimony from the alleged victims.

“’No’ means just that: it means ‘no’,” Tontz told the jury in her closing argument, further contending that “these girls felt dehumanized, embarrassed.”

The girls identified Williams after being shown an OSU basketball team photo. His defense had attempted to cast doubt as to whether he was really the person responsible, noting that several attendees were wearing similar Cowboys warm-up suits and that a case of mistaken identity was possible. Additionally, no screams were heard or struggles seen by anyone else, nor were the girls scratched or their clothes torn. Defense attorney Cheryl Ramsey called it a “he said, she said situation” in her closing argument.

Ramsey told CBS News she was “very disappointed” in the outcome of the case. She asked the judge to release Williams prior to sentencing but, noting his outburst, her request was denied.

Our black Young men have not learned about these nasty low down W omen who are sent by satan to set them up. College is not only about partying you are there to get an education
I will be praying For him that justice will prevail And that he gives his life to JESUS
    Concern mother And Grandmother

    • victor

nasty low down is not the issue. just focus on the point. a w***e can set a man up for downfall just like a quote on quote classy women with her eyes on the $”prize” can marry only so she can take half the money when something happens. don’t get the game twisted. the devil comes in many forms. this is not a issue of sexuality but simply any issue of wicked women, just like you have wicked men.

    • Shirley

I agree with you and this sound like a set-up due to little or no attention from the Baskerball Player.

These guys need to wise up, because these little girl’s want be with some on they think will be an NBA Baskerball Player some day.

After two years of this young man like another Laywer will find out that these little TRAP him.

  2. SYLVIA

Could have been a vendetta since, no clothes were torn, no scratches were found. If so I hope they burn in h**l.

  3. Nelda

I am so disappointed. Why does this happen to all our black men. I am not supporting rape.. But this is the most common way, girls ruin men careers…based on what i read from article above, it looks to me like many wholes in the story…I think more investigation should be done…The is the place where they(The White Establishment) dropped bombs on the black community back in the day…I have not forgot… I am wondering if this Black Man can get a fair trial. the tables are staxed against Black and the Justice System all ova the Nation…

    • Charles McGee

This young man could have gone to Langston University, some 20 miles from Oklahoma State University. Historically Black college are open to these young men. As Fannie Lou Hamer said, “When are their mothers get sick and tired of being sick and tired.” Why are they sending their sons and daughters to these plantations? They have not figured it out.

      • alysimone

this same thing could have happened at langston. being surrounded by black folk does not = angelic behavior/people.. its not the place its the behavior.. i don’t know for sure what happened but it seems both the men and women were bumping and grinding and things got out of hand.. maybe they protested at the time or maybe felt bad later and now crying rape…i err on the side that MOST women wouldn’t go through the public humiliation of a trial for a false allegation.. not without the hope of BIG $$ payout.. which doesn’t seem possible in this case.. either way we have to teach our men and women to behave responsibly.. have fun but be aware that ish can change on you at the drop of a dime..

      • Jane

They are sending there kids to these schools for the athletic programs, these schools are offering the boys a full ride and the chance to go pro. the HBCU’s are not.

  4. Connie

Black men simply don’t understand that white women are going to always strip them of their wealth and identity, even if hey have to lie. This brother may have got caught up in a lie, but nine times out of ten he was one who only preferred white women over black women.Their will be so many more after him with this mindset.

    • nonizer

Could it be if he were set up it was because he may have shunned the come on of the white woman for a black woman and it was payback from the white woman for being rejected ALL BLACK MEN ARE NOT SWAYED BY THE COME ON OF WHITE WOMEN so stop thinking every man with money is going to have a WHITE WOMAN.

  5. Butch

I guess he forgot what he went to college for…its sad he will learn the hard way. This is sick on both parties part! I hope he learns from this situation.

  6. Nedrea

I feel really bad….I am wondering whether he’s guilty or not because of the charges that were pinned against another man and it was later discovered that he never did anything to the girl who accused him. I am worried that he may very well be innocent.

  7. I hope that this is not yet another innocent black man convicted of a rape that may not have happen. However this is a learning lesson for all men who think that know some of these women when in reality they don’t and one slip can get you a life time of misery.A young man in California was wrongly convicted of a rape that never happen and ended up having ten years of his life taken away a chance to play professional football only to find out ten years to late that it was all a lie.So i hope that if this truly didn’t happen that the truth will prevail more sooner than later.

  8. Yolanda

What in the heck! What kind of district attorney would continue doing this? What must we do to help

  9. It’s not about white women, Jesus or anything, but his arrogance and ignorance. It’s about him growing up with parents (probably a single mother) who didn’t prepare him for life.and People who treated him like he was a god because he is was/is a good athlete.

    • Deniase

It is truly sad if this man really did commit these crimes and for that he should be punished to the full extent of the law just like anyone else his race shouldn’t be an issue, With that being black men need to stop and think, has these women ever given him the time of day let alone let him touch them or get close enough to breath the same in the air, but they saw dollar signs & super star they wanted to brand him first, usually they would wait until he’s successful before ruining his life that event would have happened a few years & one or two children down the road, but since he probably didn’t give them the time of day in his case they knew of a horrible way to bring him down with that heart wrenching four letter word R-A-P-E and he will pay the ultimate
of all consequences his future, career and ultimately his freedom. What really upsets me is that a black woman will stand by a black man and help him get to his full potential especially financially and his deep desire
for that forbidden poison rears it’s pale head, that once he has a white trophy than he is truly successful and he will find the most sleaziest, nastiest, direst white trash and will not demand anything of her just to become pretty he knows how trashy she is and he will cling to her like she was the only life boat on the titanic that can save him, than he will toss the black woman who helped him to the top overboard without batting an eye or loosing a breath he will lavish the white replacement with her wildest dreams without concern of the cost while the only woman who stood by him with all of his faults believing that their struggle will worth the battle, only for him to give the prize to the very one that has been sitting in waiting for him because of the stereotypical beliefs of the general public especially the white public that makes it easier for them to set the bait and trap, they will get pregnant during the first year of being together that gives them security, a black woman gives him a child and he would rather in some cases kill the mother and the unborn child rather than pay any type of support. It’s sad to think that this talented young man has two possibilities either he is very ignorant and very backwoods in his ability to think and determine who really cares for him with no strings attached or he has a huge ego that just got flatten.

  10. eric

First of all the coward who really did it should come forward, most likely it was a stupid a*s white boy. At college parties white boys always do stupid s**t like that and get away with it.. How the h**l you convict someone with no evidence? Ohh!! i am sorry, if you are a black male, no evidence is needed.. You people know i am not lying. Just look at some of the black men who have been sent to jail and later found out they were innocent, or convicted without no real evidence.. My grandma was a slave and recently passed away, she always told me, you may have to work beside them, but dont u ever, never trust a white woman or man. Growing up i didnt understand what she meant, but now i am so thankful for God for her explaining everything she explained and taught me about our society and white people in the united states…Sorry about what happen to you Darryll, if your coach and school really cared about you they would do more to help you, but u know Oklahoma is a racist state.

    • Marvin Gardner

      Eric,
I’m curious, but where did you read in this article that a white boy was involved?I would assume that you have been to many college parties and witnessed first hand white boys doing these kinds of things? Let’s be honest with ourselves. When we African Americans go to a party, most of the time there are problems and most of us don’t know how to act.Our people sometimes start acting ignorant, act foolish and want to solve problems with violence. Now tell me I am lying. We resort to the gun to settle differences. Now tell me I am lying about that too.Now
I do agree with you that a lot of the time innocent black men are put in prison for crimes they didn’t commit, but you need to also look at crimes that black people commit against other black people as well.
Now as far as I see from this article, there was no mention of the girls being white, black,Asian or Latin so we can’t jump to conclusions and say that they were white girls.
What we need to be doing is praying for this young man to get the proper justice and get him out of jail if he didn’t do it and look at the attorney that this young man had because the prosecutor did her job and I think the defense attorney for this young man was lacking in experience. Now what the defense attorney needs to do is right away try and get a retrial.
One last question.Have you ever been to Oklahoma?
The basic bottom point I am making here is that we as African Americans need to start accepting responsibility for our own actions and stop blaming others.

    • Cindy

Your grandmother was a slave?? How old are you? I am 63yrs. My great-grandmother who was born in the 1880′s mother was a child slave. I do not think that your grandmother was a slave.

I do regret what has happened to this young man. Leave the white girls alone but this can happened to anyone.

    • janleegette

I dont care who he is or that he is black. Our legal system is not always rwigjt but most of the time its right. You say and keep saying white women set black men up. Thats not true in most cases. Black men are not faithful . About 90%ofblack men attack white women. They think its a game . They just want the power of the take. I also believe this happens to there black women too. If not why do they make babies with more than one of their black women and never support them. Theres always some bad apples that give the whole generation a bad name. Encluding the white girls.. But we the people have to uniye to mske this a bettet place to live. If hes gulity or not, he will pay the price and hopefully makes peace with his GOD.

  11. Bryan

These young men who are seeking a professional atheletic career in basketball, football, baseball, etc.need to look and learn from past individuals who’s lives were ruined after making bad decisions especially young black men who are being targeted by these women who set out entrap them for personal financial gain.It pains me to see these young men go down as a result of there decision they have made whether if there innocent or not.

  12. eric

How ignorant is Jill Tontz the DA..she obviously has a grudge against athletes. She know d**n well there is no evidence against Darryll. What happen DA when u were in college no athlete wanted to date you? Tell those stupid a*s drunk white women to stop going to parties and getting pissy drunk..They get away from their parents and get really wild then want to cry and complain when something happen to their dumb ignorant a*s.. They were so drunk they dont know who it was.. Knowing the police in Oklahoma they probably coerce them to blame Darryll. No athlete need to or have to rape a girl. Especially an athlete on scholarship, Jill Tontz you are a really ignorant DA

  13. Marvin Gardner

Its unfortunate what has happened to this young man and I wish it didn’t happen provided he didn’t do it.Now I have read this article like all of you did and I have not seen any where in this article where it said it was two white women who were groped or this young man reached inside two white girls pants.
Many readers of this article are jumping to conclusions because none of us were there to know what really happened. How do we know it wasn’t two African American young ladies who brought these charges?
Its established that there were no scratches,no bruising and no torn clothes.I hope this young man can get a retrial and the truth comes out and those who lied will be the ones going to jail.
I would have think this is being at the wrong place at the wrong time.I also didn’t see in this article anything about some stupid a*s white boy because again we are jumping to conclusions without facts. This young man was ill prepared for the college life and what the plus sides of college life and the con side of college life.
What ever happened at that party,I hope some one with a conscience who really knows what happened comes forward and tell the truth.
Now we as readers of this article need to not read to much into this article and jump to many unfounded conclusions and pray for this young man to hope he gets justice.

  14. Peter D. Slaughter

    Overall,real tragic
I would say this should be a serious message to all black sport players future stars
Stop going to these wack parties with wack DJ’s wack phony people and this overall criminal hood element that loves to be at these no good events. How many more black people (men & women) will be beat, robbed, raped, profiled, sent to prison and killed because of just being at these no good hole in the wall dumps.
It’s obvious that the police or these people throwing these wack parties can’t even protect you,so why go to unsafe event and get hurt over some non-sense
Use your best judgment, stay home and study .

  15. Jackie

I don’t usually sympathize with alleged perpetrators, but I think that the punishment is too harsh in this case. Although, the women claimed to be humiliated and embarrassed neither of them were physically raped nor were there any witnesses to back up their claim. The judge should reconsider his sentence.

  16. blacxkcobra

CONSTITUTIONAL IMMUNITY, CONSTITUTIONAL IMMUNITY and there not a BLACK MAN or BLACK WOMAN name on the Constitution of the United States even though there was a black man present and his name was John Hanson, he was present doing the time this paper was sign so all these men are dead does that make the Constitution none in void until its resigned with living people cause a dead man can’t stand in the land of democracy and that is the loophole that I’ve seen in the paper, and a woman has just as equal power as a man has.

  17. MillieG1

If he’s guilty then he should pay for his crime, however if he is not gulity then that’s another story. Many times young black athletes attend colleges and universities and forget they purpose of attending and achieving the dreams and aspirations. Rape is a terrible crime and there is no justifiable excuse for anyone attacking, groping, man handling, and raping someone. Sadly, this young man has no only hurt himself he has also hurt the victim, his family, and the victim’s family and friends. The college should be responsible for educating all students concerning appropriate and correct behaviors regarding s****l conduct.

  18. Nita

I have my doubts about this story. You have no substantiary evidence, no bruises, nothing. When are we going to stop sending our youth to prison on empty words. Haven’t we seen enough of this in Georgia?

  20. Erica

Who said the women were white?? Is it because it is Oklahoma? Well these athletes NEED to learn to leave these women alone and focus on the reason they are in the college to begin with, some of them feel entitled and that is what gets them into a whole lot of trouble in the first place.I hope for his family’s sake he is innocent, he can appeal, but if not, he has to deal with the consequences of his actions, we need to stop playing the race card every time something happens, because our kids do things that they are not supposed to because of peer pressure or just because they want to just plain act a fool even though we raised them right.

  21. Black males do this stuff to black females all the time. Its s****l assault. The problem is that black women are so used to being mistreated, groped, felt up, talked to, called names, insulted, harassed, demeaned, slapped, punched, cussed out, molested and raped by black men that when a woman stands up to the mess, yall think somoething is wrong with HER!!!!

In reality any woman that would defend these types of actions needs to have her head examined. I’ve seen this type of behavior on the street and at parties in school. Many of the girls just cried because they didn’t know what to do. Athletes are the worst because they think they can do whatever they want on campus and it won’t get prosecuted. Sadly that has been the case, with thousands of s****l assaults occurring on our nation’s college campuses every year, not including things like this which are usually not reported.

But these behaviors hurt women. They hurt their self-esteem, and it violates the sanctity of a woman’s body. Men do not have the right to touch a woman if she did not give him permission. Going to a party, drinking, dancing – none of that gives a male the right to touch a woman’s body, to put his hands down her pants or up her skirt, to s****h off her clothes, or to throw her anywhere.

I suggest that instead of blaming the girl you women that think the girls are wrong get a clue. Focus on your past and reflect on the abuses you have suffered at the hands of men, and understand how your psyche is damaged. You have normalized abusive, aggressive male behaviors and no longer even understand which behaviors constitute abuse.

  22. Barbara English

This is wrong. The punishment doesn’t fit the crime, since when does groping constitute rape?
The evidence is insufficient. It looks like a setup by the police. I’m white and female. I lived in Oklahoma one year, not very nice people.
This is as bad as shooting Trayvon Martin. Look at the hatred it’s stirred up.
The stupidity and evil of most of the people on here is sickening.

Baskerballl,Football players of color needs to be careful who and what party they go to.

These so call womens are just waiting to have you and if that doesn’t happen, then they will set-up.

All you have to do is remember Kobe Bryant and how the HOTEL help set him up for money with that nasty girl.

My 13 year old son is playing basketball and I really need to show him this article. I was just thinking about this today as some young girl was introduced to me as one of his classmates who seemed to have eyes for him. I remembered thinking that this girl looks like trouble and made a mental note to speak to my son about groupies like this. This article is definitely a lesson and he needs to read it.

Generally, s*x is marketed every time you turn around, so it stands to reason that groping and that sort of thing can be presumed to be okay, but the consequences can be very heavy. I don’t think this is entirely a racial thing so much as a vindictive gold digging sort of thing but on the other hand many athletes are simply given a lot and the women do tend to fall all over them, so what they get away with on some women is what they tend do think they can get away with on all women. For example, Mike Tyson probably was able to force himself on other women without consequence before getting hit with a rape charge.

Perhaps if commitments to monogamous relationships were to make a come back, there’d be a lot less of this sort of thing, not to mention remembering what one is in college for. Fat chance that will happen.

I agree that young men should concentrate on academics, their sport for which they are attending school on scholarship, develop friendships and relatioships with worthy people, be selective about who they socialize with, where they go, what they do, and do not trust anyone and everyone regardless of their race or socio-economic status. Athletes have so much to lose and much more to gain if they just remain focused on getting their education and excelling at the sport for which they have been blessed with great talents. I know that they are counseled on certain aspects of college life, both males and females, athletes and non-athletes, but whether they listen or not is another story. Sometimes things happen in life to teach us a lesson. Lesson should be learned by now after so many cases in the media of the results of bad decisions. Let this be a lesson for others. Don’t allow yourselves to become victims of your own circumstances!

  27. tawanda

i bet those were white hoes.

  28. tawanda

a white person calls the cop on a black person, and fabricates lies, and the black person will always go to jail. case in point: Eric Oliver in Bronson, FL. in prison for defending himself against a racist white mob.

Where are the good lawyers when they are needed? They killed Johnny Cockren, who will
defend our innocent people? This is a sin and a shame!
    We NEED GOOD LAWYERS!!!!

  30. blessed

So sad this what i been talking bout for while set up like thses. But of course black men never learn they keep going for snow flakes on pedastal but want black women to keep waiting while they hook yp with Kardashian trash

  31. Wanda

Another sad story! Young male (paricularly male athlete) goes to a party to have fun while attending college, is not selective about where he goes to party or who he chooses to have fun with, and the rest is history….. When will they learn I don’t know enough about this case to say whether he is guilty or not guilty, so I won’t blame or take sides. If he is guilty, then he needs to face the consequences, if he is innocent, then his parents need to take this to another level and appeal. Use the due process of law to fight for their son as I would, if he were in fact innocent. Regardless the race of the defendant or the victims, rape is rape. Unwanted is unwanted!Sometimes the young female students place themselves in dangerous situations by socializing with the wrong males simply because they are athletes. Some want to be touched by male athletes, some participate in heavy drinking at parties and clubs, and therefore find themselves in situations that they are not mature enough or prepared for while at college. I hope this young man fights for his freedom if he is innocent, but man’s up and pay his dues if he is in fact guilty. I am so sorry to hear of anyone having to go through these types of situations. I am a survivor of almost being raped both by an acquaintance after a date and by a group of young teenagers. The key word is “almost”. Once they realized that “no” means “no” by my actions and resistance, they retreated. In this situation, there was no mention of any signs of resistance, which places some doubt as to whether it was unwanted especially it appears that there were more than one victim. This could very well be a case of mistaken identity or a plain right out lying to get attention or because he did not show them any attention. Either way, this young man’s life and career is at stake. The young women’s lives and reputations are at stake as well. I just hope that justice is served either way and that the truth is revealed. Still shaking my head with this same ol’same ol’scenario at colleges! People still don’t learn from others’ mistakes!

  32. Brian

After everything everyone has said it can happen to you even if you are an angel! White women as well as black woman have this as an option and a black male has little defense. Yes we have to take serious every woman that says she has been raped, but men must use what ever means to protect themselves. It is to simple to record your interactions for your protection. I understand that that may get you in trouble nut I would rather face that case to the rape case !

  33. montgomery

Can we stop blaming the black male and start blaming the judicial system. Let’s elect judges that are fair and do not worry about what their friends will think. The question is “when can you vote the District Attorney and the Judge OUT OF OFFICE.
It’s time to vote! Everyone is concerned about the Presidential election. I don’t know of one President that gets paid to put black men in jail. Judges and the District Attorneys are paid by taxpayers to carry out unjust and unfair actions. And if you think it is just ballplayers, think again. Someone in your family has been a victim.

  34. CC

I work at a HBCU and most of our children get to the campus with an attiutude that the world owes them something! It gets worse because they feel like because it is a HBCU we should “look out for them”. My heart goes out to this young man because at the point he cried out, he realized just how much his life had changed! To parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, play family what happened to him was OUR FAULT! I don’t know him, but I do know young men like him that over the years I didn’t tell them the story of how our ancestors were beat and raped so that they could get an education. Well my time to be silent was over years ago and I began taking young menand women to places that while celebrating our stregnth told the story of our heritage (Great Blacks In Wax Museum * Baltimore,MD). Let’s not blame the legal system for doing what we failed to do in our homes and communities CORRECT OUR OWN! Too many of us wereso busy getting our “hustle on”, we didn’t take the time to sit down with our children, teach them right from wrong and how to control their own sexuality even if someone else doesn’t want to control theirs! This was not the first time this happened and the sad truthis that it won’t be the last time!

  35. LadeeKathleen

Did I miss something? Is it correct that there was no physical evidence, the plaintiffs did not know the perpetator and had to identify him by photograph and the party was crammed with athletic young men, some of whom wore the same clothes and were black? So what made the jury convict this man? Don’t get me wrong, no means no but who learns the lesson if the real perpetator is not convicted or the young lady is never quite sure?
