Chicago Thieves Make Off with Thousands of Dollars in Hair Extensions
Breaking through a wall overnight, unknown thieves made off with $230,000 worth of hair extensions from 35th Street Beauty Supply in Chicago.
The criminals entered the building through the wall of an adjacent vacant storefront around 2:00AM Saturday morning and crawled along the floor to avoid motion detectors before disabling the building’s alarm system and taking all of owner Don Shin’s best and most expensive merchandise.
“They knew what they were doing. They didn’t take any of the cheap stuff,” Shin told the Chicago Tribune.
Due to the demand for hair weaves, which have become very popular especially among members of the black community, natural hair extensions have been steadily increasing in price, as they are the most favored.
A similar theft occurred in April 2011, when burglars stole $80,000 worth of human hair from another store in the city. Police and store owners say the priciest brands, such as Indi Remy and Bohyme, were recognized and targeted in the earlier robbery.
Videotape surveillance indicates the perpetrators drove behind the store in a white van and struggled with a steel door bolted shut with two deadbolts. Eventually, a metal pry bar was used to successfully open the door.
Shin hopes publicity from the case will draw attention to any individuals unloading a large supply of hair. “It’s going to be hard [to catch the thieves], but they are probably going to try to sell it quickly,” he noted.

Why do African American women feel they need LONG hair? What concept of beauty are they following? Sometimes is fine. We all use various enhancements, sometimes; earrings(men and women); make up, even using a perm which make our hair more manageable etc. However, all those extensions, constantly. Also where are all the black hair stores

It’s our African-American(AA) men and society that makes AA women feel that they need long straight hair! When I wore my hair permed, I got all types of guys trying to get my attention. I went natural about 9 years ago and many of those same guys won’t even look my direction. It will not change until our people change. AA men don’t care if you have 2 strands of hair. They’d rather you perm it than wear it in it’s natural state. Hell, they’d rather you wear wigs and weaves and braids than to wear your beautiful course locks. This is sad. AA people need to learn to love themselves in every shade, in every shape, in every size, in whatever type of hair.

I’ve “Sister Locks” for almost 4 years. They have grown & are very attractive.
I have a male friend who says he doesn’t like any braids because they remind him of the cotton fields when Blacks couldn’t do any better. I told him Blacks in the cotton fielfs couldn’t afford “Sister Locks”. It is sad that some of us still use the standard of long & straight as beautiful.
