Michelle Obama Cheers on Serena, Who Dominates a Strong Opponent in the Olympics

We all love Serena and Michelle, and they love each other.  In the latest example of black female public support and appreciation, First Lady Michelle Obama showed up to support tennis star Serena Williams in her quest for Olympic gold.  Serena didn’t disappoint, dominating her opponent who had the serious misfortune of running into a superstar who is also fresh off a Wimbledon title.

Serena gave the first lady a treat, with a dominating 6-3, 6-1 victory over former No. 1 Jelena Jankovic of Serbia. After the match, the two women met up with one another and exchanged greetings.

“Before, I would have been too nervous,” Williams said. “We talked about how I loved her dress. She’s always looking good.”

Serena, in spite of all of achievements, has not yet won an Olympic singles medal.  The grass on the court made for a slippery experience for Williams, who relies on strength, speed and skill to win her matches.

“The grass is a wee bit slippery, but you’ve just got to deal with it,” Williams said. “Get ready to slip and slide, whatever it takes. The area at the net didn’t wear out so much. Maybe a lot of the players will start coming to the net.”

Serena was also happy to be playing in the new Olympic venue, which isn’t the same British venue where Wimbledon is held.

“Wimbledon is so quiet. You know, you don’t hear much talking,” Williams said. “But here you do hear talking. This atmosphere I didn’t expect. It’s bananas, and I love it.”

Nothing is as it seems and we as a people (especially African-Americans) are not what we should be.

Darrell, perhaps I can help you understand what is meant by “national treasures” as the term relates to Serena and Venus. These African American women as girls entered what was arguably the most exclusive and whitest sport in the world, a sport of privilege, wealth and pedigree. However they didn’t come from privileged circumstances, country club upbringing or professional training to launch their careers. A Black father (in every sense of the word) taught them to play on Compton public courts. They wore braided hair with beads totally unapologetic about their African heritage. The ostracism, criticism, media discrimination, verbal abuse and mockery they experienced is unparalleled since the days of Jackie Robinson. Yet they persevered and ultimately dominated the game while literally saving and reinventing women’s tennis worldwide and inspiring countless numbers of African American and girls of all races to pursue the sport. Despite their enormous accomplishments, winning every grand slam and olympic gold, they have not been acknowledged in a manner commensurate with their worldwide status or even approaching what Caucasian players of lesser distinction have received. They ARE national treasures and it is heartwarming to see the First Lady of the United States recognize and celebrate their importance and accomplishments.

Thank you Ronald, for explaining, to those who do not know already know, the background of the amazing Williams sisters. This septuagenarian white grandmother is thrilled to see our incredible First Lady pay tribute to and acknowledge the remarkable accomplishments of Serena AND Venus. Theirs is another “only in America” Story”. I wish continued Successes for both Mrs. Obama and the Williams Sisters. As I applaud the Tennis Accomplishments of Serena and Venus, I also applaud and am grateful for the focus of our caring First Lady on the issue of childhood Obesity, which has become a national problem that threatens our Economy as well as the health of future generations. I invite the Williams Sisters to JOIN her campaign to inspire families to encourage their children to be more physically active, AND to eat a healthier diet. What an amazing team THAT would make! Kudos all around, and thanks to all three of these Ladies for the way they Bless and serve as examples through all that they do to inspire us. Indeed. They both are a Gift to our Country!
