News Anchor Frank Somerville Takes Out His Daughter’s Braids

Oakland, California’s KTVU 10 o’clock news anchor, Frank Somerville, recently gave fans a glimpse into his personal life via his Facebook page. He posted a picture of himself taking down his adopted African American daughter’s braids.

The caption read:

So for those of you who think tv can be glamorous, this is how i spent my morning, learning how to take out my daughter’s braids. It takes a long time and a lot of patience!

The photo quickly acquired over 1,400 comments and 2,500 shares on Facebook. The “Kodak moment” between a Caucasian father and his African American daughter sharing an intimate moment that so few ethnicities can relate to created an abundance of sentiments related to colorblind love, family, and doing hair. Despite an overwhelmingly positive response, there were racist comments made as well.

Some of the Facebook comments read:

This makes me happy in so many different ways….

A sign of the times!!

Appreciate seeing what the media won’t show ~ real love of each other.

In response to the overwhelming response to the photo, Somerville posted the following status:

It’s not often that I am speechless, but I am floored by the response to the picture I posted, and by how touching and personal many of them were. To me the picture shows a dad doing what a dad SHOULD do, and loving every minute of it. The birth of my first daughter, and adopting my youngest daughter, are the two best moments of my life, and I feel like the luckiest dad in the world that my family is interracial. I can’t thank all of you enough. And remember CHANGE HAPPENS ONE PERSON AT A TIME!

I applaud him for adopting a child, but I don’t understand the overwhelming outpour of sentiments for a man who is doing his daughter’s hair. Is it because she’s African American and he’s Caucasian??? This instance is one of many instances that further prove how far behind America is on matters regarding race.
