Researchers: Your Black Skin’s Reaction to Sunlight May Be Linked to Higher Cancer Rates

By  |  22 Comments

Scientists are claiming that Vitamin D may help solve the puzzle of higher cancer rates in African Americans.  Black Americans are 25 percent more likely to die from cancer than whites, and there are a variety of factors that may play a role in this disparity.   But scientists believe that they’ve unearthed a huge discovery.

A study published inthe journal Dermato-Endocrinology says that the sun may actually be part of the reason for the gap in cancer rates.   The researchers believe that black skin can’t absorb the sunlight necessary to generate adequate amounts of vitamin D.  Vitamin D is known as “the sunshine vitamin.”   The body uses ultraviolet sun rays to generate vitamin D for various layers of the skin.

Vitamin D is needed to keep bones strong.  Deficiencies in vitamin D are believed to contribute to weak immune systems, cancer and other diseases.  The researchers make the bold claim that a vitamin D deficiency can explain the entire cancer gap between blacks and whites that is not explained by other factors, such as socioeconomic conditions.

Researcher Rick Kittles at The University of Chicago has determined that over 75 percent of African Americans suffer from deficiencies in vitamin D.  Kittles also said that African Americans living above the 37th parallel, north of Texas, Tennessee, North Carolina or central California, will have trouble getting enough sunlight to make vitamin D for their bodies.

Alan Peiris of East Tennessee State University and William Grant of the Sunlight, Nutrition and Health Research Center in San Francisco went to study whether or not the vitamin D disparity contributes to the high cancer rates.   The researchers admit that there is more work to be done, but a simple literature review leads them to conclude that low vitamin D is associated with each of the cancer types that present an unexplained health disparity between black and white Americans.

They specifically name these kinds of cancers: bladder, breast, colon, endometrial, lung, ovarian, pancreatic, prostate, rectal, testicular, and vaginal cancer; Hodgkin’s lymphoma; and melanoma. Maybe you should go take your vitamins right now.

How about less animal or low grade meat and more plant based diet and then lets see what happens to cancer rates. Sounds like preparation for a new drug to come on the market. I wonder what would happen to those cancer rates if we did not have MCdonald’s, Burger King, Wendy’s just to name a few in our communities along with the alcohol. Those have more to do with higher cancer rates than our god given protection we call Melanin. How about they address the legalized death used to preserve the food served by Fast Food restaurants…

Sounds about right, Nsikak. Melanin has many powers that many white-oriented researchers have ignored.

Nsikak may be onto something, but there is another major point related to diet that should also be addressed. Much of the vitamin D provided in Western diets is in milk. Black folks don’t drink it, partly due to poor overall nutrition, but also partly due to lactose intolerance. East Asian populations also suffer from high levels of lactose intolerance, but their maintenance of traditional diets keeps them from facing vitamin deficiencies. Dietary guidelines in the US don’t acknowledge this point, so little attention is given to the need to supplement the diets of blacks in different ways.

Nsikak and Ellington are right, I didn’t expect them to take that into consideration. When it deals with black folks it’s never fully researched!!!!

Very true to all that has post keep in mind the milk in the western world is laced with bovine growth hormone puss blood and many other things that actually causes osteoporosis. Drink organic coconut or almond milk non soy. Almond breeze is a good brand it is also vegan. Keep in mind as well that sunscreen contains cancerous toxins. The key to all ailment is proper nutrition, organic. This is including hiv. The so called incurable disease that was made in a lab which has a patent number. INCREDIBLE

One thing, black people’s body produces natural vitamin D. It is the fake vitamin D through cows milk, man-made vitamin D, and other dietary foods that we should not be taking that is causing cancer in black people.
